Where the Hell is Desert Babies?!?,

This is part of a hilarious review that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, written by Peter Hartlaub, about Desert Babies.
"Purely judged as literature, "Desert Babies" is lacking. The book consists of a series of photos of baby animals, with captions that couldn't be more obvious -- or have taken more than three minutes to write. ("Tortoise hatchling eats flowers for lunch," "What are these quail chicks looking for?" etc.) Of course, my 1 1/2-year-old fell in love with this book. It's his "Twilight." And then a really weird thing happened. I started to fall in love with it, too. Two events sealed "Desert Babies" fate as the most cherished book in our house: 1. My younger son began kissing the baby animals as I turned each page. This was probably related to my decision to teach him to kiss the little black cat in "Maisy's Fire Engine." But his insistence on kissing each desert baby was still a complete surprise, and pretty much the cutest thing ever. 2. My older son memorized the book. Our 4 1/2-year-old cannot read much more than his name and the label on a can of Pennzoil. But like the rest of the household, he knows every word to "Desert Babies" by heart. I can sit him down next to his brother, and he can read the entire thing -- with or without the book. More than once I've witnessed him in the back seat of the car in a meditative state, mumbling "Owlet is safe in his cactus nest ... Little fawn finds leaves to eat ... ." Time has also proven that this book it abnormally durable. Regan talked about how some children's books quickly deteriorate -- I'm beginning to think that the spine of "Desert Babies" has been infused with the same metal that the government used to make Wolverine's claws. While other considerably less popular books in the house are chewed at the corners or have pieces of the photos torn off, our copy of "Desert Babies" looks as if it just came off the shelf. I could return it to the Phoenix airport tomorrow, and they would probably give me my money back. Then again, why the hell would I want to do that? "Desert Babies" has become such an important part of our family, I find myself anxious when it's not in the little board book basket in our living room. "Where's 'Desert Babies'? WHERE THE HELL IS 'DESERT BABIES'?!?
