I love these little guides and this one is no exception. They are informative, beautiful, and pocket-sized. Though it doesn't have every species you will find, it does give interesting natural history tidbits on the ones that are included.

I was expecting something like the Golden Guide series, but on desert plants and animals. What I got is a 64-page disorganized pamphlet that could well have been done as a high school art major for a biology project . The pictures are mostly pretty well done, although plant folliage is poorly depicted and there is no scale at all - a Red-tailed Hawk is shown smaller than a Cactus Wren and barely bigger than a Darkling Beetle - all on the same page. Descriptions are poor or completely missing. The information wanders around the pictures and sometimes are difficult to tell what goes with what. The whole thing has no organization at all; Birds, mice, insects and snakes share the same page with cacti and other plants. The plants and animals are identified as to which of the 4 desert regions they are found, but then not separated by these areas. Trying to find a plant or animal without knowing the name - and looking it up in the poorly organized index - is nearly impossible. There are some very good water-color type pictures and some interesting information here, but the lack of organization makes it very hard to get at.
