5.0 out of 5 stars amazing and otherworldly, March 9, 2007

am a big cocorosie fan, so had to have this.
exceeded my expectations! distant, inventive. dreamy.
sounds in places as if it were recorded on old cassette decks, or from far away; adds to the mystery.

not sure what it all means, though...but am enjoying it as it is.

recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, dreamy and subdued..., December 4, 2010
This review is from: Desert Doughnuts (Audio CD)
Being a CocoRosie fan, I was, naturally, intrigued by "Desert Doughnuts" as I knew that Sierra (the classically trained sister from CocoRosie) was a part of the project. Mattheah Baim is the other member of the duo...

Buying this album because of my love for CocoRosie's music, my expectations were very different, but definitely exceeded. I was probably expecting it to be a lot weirder than it is. One could argue that CocoRosie's music is rather pretentious and over the top (although I wouldn't agree), but Metallic Falcons is a lot more "normal" than CocoRosie, although it certainly wouldn't be played on any average radio station...

It's rather hard to describe what this music sounds like, but, I think the genre many reviews have given it (soft metal) is a suitable one. Guitars are the main instrument used, but piano and keyboards are used as well. Mattheah and Sierra both contribute their vocals as well. Most of the album is quite distorted, and has a soft crackle in the background (as the previous reviewer mentioned, it does sound like it was recorded on old casette decks).

Almost a year after I've bought it, it is now right up there with my three favourite albums of all time, along with Mike Oldield's "Tubular Bells" and "Summer Make Good" by Múm.

The mood of the album is very very dark, dreamy, subdued, trippy and strange. People who listen to less artistic music would probably call it depressing, and I would definitely disagree. Listening to it really does take you on a very enjoyable journey.

Sadly, not much information is available about Metallic Falcons, or Mattheah Baim (who has, up until now, released two solo albums after this one - Death of the Sun and Laughing Boy). Perhaps it's a good thing, as it definitely adds to the mystery of this beautifully crafted music.

I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys CocoRosie, Múm, Grails, Juana Molina, or Bat for Lashes' music. It is absolutely amazing...

Note; if you enjoy this album, I URGE you to get "Death of the Sun" by Mattheah Baim (Mattheah's first solo album, released in 2007, the year after "Desert Doughnuts". After ordering it on Amazon a week ago, it arrived in the post this morning. After the first listen, I think Mattheah Baim is sure to become one of my absolute favourite artists...
