Book Description

Western Historical Romance set in Civil War Texas

When a riverboat gambler's daughter is rescued from unsavory gunfighters by a strong, handsome stranger, she never suspects the true reason for his heroics. Anne Cameron wants nothing more than to start over, to have a real home for the first time in her life. She makes the long, dangerous trip from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Ubiquitous, Texas, only to find that yet again her dream has eluded her. Alone in a savage land, Anne soon realizes her only hope for the life she wants is a cache of Confederate gold hidden somewhere in Mexico, and the only man who can save her is the last man she should trust.

A renowned gunfighter, Rafe Montalvo lost everything in a devastating act of violence. For five years, he has roamed the West, a bounty hunter bent on revenge. Just when his goal is finally within reach, he is saddled with a spitfire woman who revives a part of him he'd thought long dead. And though he feels himself more and more drawn to her, he believes he can never be worthy of her love.

Will they have to forfeit their desires to turn the nightmares of the past into sweet desert dreams?

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good December 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The guy: Rafe Montalvo, bounty hunter, gun slinger and a man with a whole lot of emotional baggage he can't let go. He's just caught up with a member of a notorious band of Mexican bandits he's been hunting for years, but the man is shot and on his dying breath he reveals the location of a huge amount of stolen gold - but Rafe isn't the one who learns the secret...

The girl: Anne Cameron, daughter of a shiftless gambler (now dead), she's hoping to now live with her aunt in Ubiquitous Texas. On the way, she runs into Rafe Montalvo (they don't hit it off too well), and circumstances put her next to the dying man who reveals the secret of the hidden gold. Anne finally reaches her aunt, only to find her dead and her house ready for auction, and she's out of money. What's a girl with no money to do? Why, head out over miles of treacherous desert and find that gold.

"This part of Texas must be the closest thing to hell on earth. In fact, had anyone asked her for a description of hell, this would have been it."

OK, I know Anne sounds like one of those stubborn romance heroines that run off out into danger at the drop of a hat, but she's not. She's had a hell of a time with her shiftless father (details revealed slowly), and she's had to learn to go it on her own and take care of herself. Same thing for Rafe, he's not like all those Regency heroes we're so sick of with their constant pity party whinging and moaning over the awfulness of it all. He's got some serious baggage and the details when they are revealed are why this book made my not-recommended-for-the-fluffies shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars True western themed romance July 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Desert Dreams is a true western-themed romance; not the usual where authors simply slap cowboy boots and hats on their pre-existing cliches of characters. Rather, it's set in Civil War-era Texas and deals with the real (but still quite exciting) conflicts that befell gunfighters of those days, including dealing with a Mexican head honcho, hidden caches of cash and a past that haunts.

Anne is neither a delicate flower sighing at every moment nor a headstrong, jaded sourpuss hellbent on avoiding interpersonal connection; refreshing, as these two categories seem to dominate romance heroines and are more than a little tiresome. And while Rafe is all the rakish pistol-wielding rogue we can help but swoon for, he's got a heart, a past, and real dimension.

Highly enjoyable romance with evocative setting and plenty of excitement beyond the steamy bits. Excellent.

The first time I read this author and was very pleased. She is very good at establishing the characters early and then building them so can relate to them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Desert Dreams August 7, 2014

This was a real bargain and I'm so glad I stumbled across this book when it was mentioned on the forums. It ticked all the components that I look for in a western romance. There was an emotionally tortured hero Rafe Montovelo, a bounty hunter running from a past that was too unbearable and horrific to remember. Annie Cameron was a fiesty heroine who was used to adversity but was no shrinking violet. They both fight an unwilling attraction as they join forces to hunt for stolen gold bullion hidden deep in Mexico. This historical western was also quite gritty in some parts as it deals with atrocities by a band of Commancheros led by the evil El Alacran.

This is a well written historical western romance, written with some substance.I enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Western romance June 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great Western set romance of one person seeking out treasure and a better life while the other is seeking revenge. What Anne and Rate don't count on is falling in love along the way. But is Rate truly prepared to love anybody. When you find out what happened to his wife it is easy to see why he is so vengeful. Anybody who likes romance especially ones set in the Old West will like this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was a good read August 4, 2014

I know that I love drama. This book has it in spades. I will say for me the reason behind Rafe's reason for his depression was a little too much for me. I know those things happened. I am not an ostrich with my head in the sand. But other than that it was a pretty good read.
