Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?The desert fox, or fennec, smallest of the wild dogs, is an endearing animal often featured in children's zoos in exhibits on the senses because of its remarkable hearing. So, even though it's never found in North America, it will be familiar to many readers, and they should enjoy learning more about it and the remarkable adaptations it has developed to survive in a desert environment. This gorgeous photo essay follows one particular family. Their habitat and its seasonal changes, the Bedouin people who sometimes keep these animals as pets, and other creatures that share their home are all brought into the story. Readers watch the four cubs grow, play, and learn to hunt; follow the mother on a hunting trip; and see a rare visit from the affectionate father. Laukel smoothly conveys the facts through text and full-color photographs. Though fennecs are mentioned in many juvenile titles on wild dogs, foxes, and the desert, this is the only book on the topic currently in print.?Susan Oliver, Hillsborough County Science Library at MOSI, Tampa, FL

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. As a boy the author became fascinated by desert foxes, or fennecs, after a visit to the Frankfurt Zoo. This interest later took him to the Sahara to photograph the cute but elusive desert creatures. These nocturnal animals, about which scientists know very little, are highlighted in irresistible, well-executed color photographs and an informal text. The beauty and mystery of the creature and its habitat are present on every page. Denia Hester --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I found this book to be very well written. It had many facts and detailed pictures. The facts were very clear and interesting. The pictures were amazing. The pictures were close and very detailed along with capturing the fennec foxes personality. I liked the book so much that I told my friends about it and they all bought one to.
