3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars- Fun Western, Worth a Read!, December 19, 2009
This review is from: Desert Heart (Paperback)
Misunderstandings abound in this rather long Western - set in 1880's Arizona. This re-released early Bobbi Smith novel shows the promise of the beloved author even early in her career... the landscape is well-described, the time researched, and the plot nicely rounded and solid. This rather long, nearly epic, romance follows the journey of 18 year-old Lorelei as she returns to the Wild West to take over her father's gold mine, who has recently passed. This determined and headstrong young lady is thwarted by her father's will, which leaves her under the guardianship of her childhood hero, Deputy Marshal Rand McAllister. His fall from grace happened some seven years before in her mind, and their attraction only serves as a frustration for Lorelei. Together they face saboteurs, that would destroy both their love and their respective properties, as well as a handful of other issues that cause a train wreck of misunderstandings. In addition, this novel offers the romantic perspective of at least half a dozen characters, so strap in for an active thought-driven plot. If you can grit your teeth through the immature and stubborn antics of the goat-headed teenager Lorelei and the non-stop miscommunications between her and Rand, you'll find a good solid Western well worth the read full of lots of fun surprises and plot twists.

On a last note- if poor editing bugs you, there are issues/ typos in this book that were noticeable. I'm not overly picky about one or two typos, but I caught one about every chapter or so that distracted me. One character even refers to her cousin as her brother in conversation, and then refers to him again as her cousin just paragraphs later. I read it twice thinking she meant that her cousin "is like her brother" but no, she actually just calls him her brother. Things like that...
