Attempting to escape a rejected love turned stalker, Patience Sinclair heads south, to the rodeo. Originally, the trip was planned just to work on her disertation, but escape becomes the focus. The rodeo is a whole new world. Cowboys, barrel racers, and courageous clowns have their own civilization in which Patience becomes enthralled. It has its own inherent romance, and Patience soon has to face her fears when she gets entangled with an overly amorous cowboy. Before trouble can get out of hand, she is rescued by the someone who won't be turned aside. Dallas embodies everything a man ought to be, and is willing to be there for Patience. When the city girl learns that danger lurks even there, a serial killer is on the loose, she will need all her own skills and all of Dallas' courage to handle the situation. If she lives through it, it will be time to go home, and leave behind her heart. Can she do it, or is there another way? **** Some writers pen such wonderful books that reviewers almost hate them; it's hard to write about the story without letting out too much, and then reading lesser books is painful. However, although Kat Martin fits this category, I don't want her to ever stop. She makes the settings and people seem real, yet still has the slight larger than life quality that makes reading her books an escape from reality. ****

I really enjoyed this book. I could hardly put it down. It is not a great suspense novel, the suspense is of the mild type. The romance is good and the suspense was good enough for me.Dallas and Patience are worlds apart in their careers, but love doesn't understand careers. I liked the tangle of emotions they had to go through. I really enjoyed the facts about rodeos. I have never been interested in them, but some of the things I learned were fasinating. This is not a spectacular book. But it is a warm, fulfilling read. That is what I look for in a book, not great soul-searching, or drama, but a warm, cozy, feeling when you finish it.

I bought this book with a lot of Kat Martin books on eBay. The first Kat Martin book I read was Scent of Roses, I loved it. Then I read the Dream. Now that I'm on to this book, the story is very predictable. Kat's stories are always about a woman who the oldfashioned type who wants a relationship and not a fling. She's been burned in the past by previous men. She meets the main male character in the book and they have an attraction, try to fight it and in the end get together. There's some steamy romance but it's like reading the same story set in different places over and over again.
In this book, the woman is Patience Sinclair and the man is Dallas Kingston. Patience is working on her Ph.D. and for her thesis, she's writing about women in the rodeo scene both past and present. She's following one of the women in the rodeo, meets up with Dallas. Romance goes on from there. It's a pretty good book but I wouldn't recommend reading it if you've read a bunch of Kat Martin books already.

. This is a book I could not put down. The characters, plot and suspense
kept me interested and waiting to see what would happen next. This is one of the best books I ever enjoyed. I'll recommend it and loan it to friends, but I want it returned so I can keep it for rereading in the future.

Patience Sinclair is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend. But that's not what leads her to a summer filled adventure touring with a group of rodeo people. She's writing a dissertation on women in rodeo for her PhD.
What she didn't expect to come up against was the irrisitably sexy world champion all-around cowboy Dallas Kingman. Knowing that the two are complete opposites and only destined for heartache at the end of the summer, the two try to stay away from one another. However, that is easier said than done. With a series of mishaps and accidents, the two are continuously thrown together. Is foul play to blame for all the unfortunate events surrounding the rodeo sponsor, or is it just bad luck? Dallas has his plate full trying to find the truth as well as fighting his growing affection for Patience. Can they make the impossible work? This was more of a romance than a romantic suspense as categorized by the publishers. The suspense angle was not developed as well as it could have been. The first chapter leads you to believe that the story will revolve around Patience's stalker as she leaves for the rodeo, but that angle dissolves before it ever really builds. Never does the writer hint at a suspect surrounding the rodeo accidents or motive for them. The red herrings are weak and the writer also fails to develop the villians story. Unfortunately, the only thing pulling the story along are the character's. Is it worth buying? I enjoyed the concept of the book and the romance of it, but the suspense was just to weak to keep me glued to the pages. As part of a trilogy, I do not feel it necessary to have read the others. This book stands alone, but I do not feel strongly about recommending it for purchase. Therefore, it would be better to check it out from the library.

Grab hold of your seats- or saddle- everyone. You are in for an intensely wild ride. And this one is A LOT better than the first one. The characters are engaging and their story is easy to follow along with. What I wouldn't do for a guardian angel in the form of Dallas the dream boy. What a wild ride. Grab a hold of this story; you won't regret it. Can't wait for the 3rd book in this series.

This book was really good. It is the 2nd in a trilogy by Kat Martin. The third book is to come out this year, I believe.
Patience and Dallas are a great couple. Of course, there are the typical trials and tribulations as in every romance novel, and add a little suspense with a stalker, and you'll have a hit. This book I could not put down. It's not my favorite Kat Martin book, but this ranks well up there. Buy it. You will not be disappointed. :)

well.....the ending ruins it (?Losing Patience?),

I really enjoyed Desert Heat - the Southwest location, the rodeo setting, the "intellectual" addition of Patience's PhD dissertation, the mini-mysteries of Tyler, Charlie and Lucky and, of course the total sexiness of Dallas. HOWEVER the ending was abominable....the heroine who works so hard to get her PhD gives up her career immediately to be with her lover - and - what is WORSE Kat Martin provides an alternate ending (of Dallas switching his career to become a vet and stay with PJ in Boston) which is rejected!!!!! How retro can you be???? It really ruined the book for me and turned it into such a cliche in the last few pages, which was unnecessary!!! Does Kat Martins "audience" require this self-effacing behavior? I myself have a PhD (and I love good romance novels) and I was totally turned on to Dallas BUT I would never just give my work up like that. In fact I'd find it sexy that a man like Dallas would offer himself to me so that we both could prosper! So sad. Yes, I am "losing Patience."

This is my first Kat Martin book, and I loved it! I'm not much for 'sappy' romance novels and to me, this one wouldn't quite fall into that category. I agreed with some of the other reviews in saying I learned things about the west and the rodeo I would not have known otherwise. I could not put the book down any time the story shifted to the two main characters Dallas and Patience encountering each other, especially in the beginning, watching the attraction of these two opposites (who aren't really all that opposite afterall) start to grow. I was totally drawn into it. Great romance, educational, interesting characters...two thumbs up! I plan to read Kat Martin's first book in this trilogy called 'Midnight Sun'.

As Patience Sinclair arrives at the rodeo in Texas. She's driving a little red Chrysler convertible. Enjoying the wide open spaces of Texas. Finally away from the last terrible six months. She's not paying much attention to her speed, thinking of the exciting summer ahead. She doesn't see the horse and boy until he dashes out in front of her.She slams on the brakes. Misses the boy and the other two riders. She apoligizes. But one of the cowboys don't care much for her Boston accent. Patience has had enough of her share of pushy men. She speeds off for the arena. When she approaches another cowboy looking for Shari Wills. The cowboy points her out as the little red head. Shari is a barrel racer. She will be Patience roommate for the summer. Patience is doing research for her thesis on Modern Day Women of the West. Shari takes Patience to meet the owner of the rodeo "Circle C" Charlie Carson. She also introduces her to the rest of the rodeo. As she is intoduced to Dallas Kingman, she recognizes him as one of the cowboys she ran into on the road. She thought she should have recognized him before as the "World Champion All-Round Cowboy". But she didn't before now. Her and Dallas at first do not hit it off. She thinks he's arrogant and overbearing. He thinks she's out spending daddy's money and that she is what they call a buckle bunny.Through out the summer Patience proofs Dallas wrong. Someone is causing accidents at the rodeo. And there costing money and horses. Dallas and Patience finally hit it off. Between the two of them they find out who and why. But will the two of them be able to their differences aside and live happily ever after or will they seperate to live the lives they've made for themselves. Him a cowboy. Her a proffessor. Have fun reading "Desert Heat". Very good book. You'll enjoy it from the first page to the last. |
