5.0 out of 5 stars A rousing rendition of "Cold Duck Time", May 1, 2011
By
This review is from: Desert Heat (Audio CD)
I can only comment on the one track from this album which I have heard on the radio, a cover of Eddie Harris' "Cold Duck Time" which is true to the original upbeat swinging mood of the piece, but with fresh original instrumentation. I am ordering the disc & hope to return with more comments soon....

5.0 out of 5 stars Bangin!, September 29, 2007

This guy's smokin' on the B-3. I've loved "organ trio" since the early 70s, when I was introduced to it as a 13 year-old kid in Philly. I met Papa John back in '82 at Gert's, one of the last bastions of the form on a "jam" night. He brought some kid - oh yeah, his son Joey, who was 10 at the time. The two of them blew the walls out...but like the old showbiz line goes, never work with kids (or dogs) - his son became famous. Papa john, though is the "roots" of his son's talents and amibition. This collection shows him at his best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Papa John not Son!!!, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Desert Heat (Audio CD)
The music is good, but I was looking for more input from Papa, and not as much from his son. You can distinctly place who is the main driving force on the key board vs. the organ. Yet when the old man does come in to play it is great.

Papa John has outdone himself on this cd- pokuscadabra is the teaser and then cold duck time really takes off with the show....fantastic work by both Joey and Papa John along with Tony and Ramon Banda. If you like a rocking latin rhythm COLD DUCK TIME will do the job. All the players get a chance to do some really tight work on this major number on the cd. Check it out, well worth having in your collection. A real gem. My main reason for buying this cd. Tune 88 comes right back at you after a lovely version of I'll close my eyes.
Papa John and his crew cover the gamut of the B3 spectrum with these tunes and some really nice melodies- like Tune 88, What now my love and House of the Rising son. Something for everyone here.
