Book Description

July 30, 2007

Time and experiences had left lines on my face, which had grown deeper, like the dusty trails of my life that I seemed to be retracing.

Reeling from yet another relationship failure, Jerry travels to the American Southwest to spend a couple of months riding his horse, savoring the warm weather, and finding respite from the daily grind. But what begins as a simple escape to the wide-open spaces of Arizona soon becomes a powerful odyssey of self-discovery.

When Jerry comes upon an Indian named Tom in the middle of the Superstition Mountains, he senses that the meeting is no casual encounter. Wise and unreserved, Tom speaks to Jerry with a knowingness that both unnerves and captivates him.

Jerry is compelled to return to the mountain again and again to accept Tom’s challenges, exercises, and assignments for living in the moment, tuning into the love all around him, and honoring a connection to Spirit. With Tom as his guide, Jerry uses dreams and visions of his own past lives to make sense of his modern reality.

Tom’s lessons cause Jerry to question long-held beliefs, but they also afford him the insight he needs to move beyond pain and make his metaphysical journey toward inner peace and enlightenment.

5.0 out of 5 stars This could be me!, September 10, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Desert Journey (Paperback)

Have you walked away from the best that could happen to you? Dr. Jerry Burgener almost did. Will the sometimes bewildering turns of your life finally lead to a rational explanation for those painful, frustrating, punishing relationships? Dr. Jerry rode his horse into the desert Southwest not expecting the revelations hiding within himself. A companion from his distant past waits for Jerry to make the last turn on the desert trail. Waits for the re-union long in the making. But, rounding the last bend, Jerry does not recognize the stranger before him. His memories long forgotten, Jerry is exposed to his past actions in as gentle manner as possible by his unrecognized friend, Tom.

How does a forensic psychologist, National Guard helicopter pilot, skilled skydiver and fixed wing pilot come to experience the most exhilarating, eye opening, spiritual events in his life? This is his story. Is it like yours?

4.0 out of 5 stars to go beyond and to love, a will to live, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Desert Journey (Paperback)
Desert Journey is an encouraging novel. It is founded upon an interesting metaphysics, and well decorated by the beautiful desert imagery. The protagonist Jerry's strength to accept the difficulties that arise in his life, and his willingness to look within himself to learn from his experiences are both truly admirable.

High Adventure for the Spiritually Inclined

Have you raced through much of a book then put it down because you didn't want it to end? That's how I felt about Desert Journey by Dr. Jerry Burgener. Dr. Jerry rides his horse, named Liberty, to Superstition Mountain in Arizona and found himself on a spiritual journey that took courage, the same courage that drove him to jump from a plane in his youth. Beginning with a "lesson for happiness" posed by his spiritual guide Tom, to "stay in the here and now," Jerry finds the lesson more challenging than he first thought.

Once mastering the lesson, Jerry invites risks even after Tom warns, "Be careful what you ask for; you might get it." He experiences astral travel, past life regression, and greater understanding of challenges with relationships in his current life. Tom's central spiritual questions are only partly answered - "what is love and what does it have to do with existence?" Jerry leaves the desert and promises to bring readers with him on another journey. With bated breath, we await his next book.

If you're looking for a deeper understanding of spiritual experiences, an engaging description of the desert southwest, a sensitive relationship between a man and his horse, or you're a feminist who cares what happened to strong men when we liberated ourselves, this book is a must read.
