THE SERIES:
The Desert Peach is a comic book created by Donna Barr, chronicling the adventures of the eponymous protagonist, Erwin “The Desert Fox” Rommel’s fictitious homosexual younger brother, Oberst Manfred Pfirsich Marie Rommel (1900-1990), nicknamed the “Desert Peach”. Early issues of the comic focused on the Peach’s command of a misfit unit of the Afrika Korps from 1940 to 1943; subsequent issues have explored the pre- and post-war lives of Pfirsich (German for “Peach”) and his supporting cast. The Desert Peach was first published in 1989, by MU Press/AEON, and later by A Fine Line. 32 issues were released throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and subsequently re-released in eight collected volumes; as well, a Desert Peach musical was produced in 1992, and "Bread and Swans", a Desert Peach novel, was released in 2005. With the exception of the musical, all Desert Peach material has been created entirely by Barr.

More About the Author

Donna Barr is the author of the classic comics series, "The Desert Peach," following the life of the Desert Fox's fictional gay brother. She is also the author of "Stinz," about a civilized, rural centaur stallion, and "Bosom Enemies," which has been called a fable about slavery.

She is the author of such prose novels as "Permanent Party," her fictionalized memoir of life as a WAC in the early 1970's; "Bread and Swans," continuing stories of the life of The Desert Peach"; and "An Insupportable Light," the original novel that led to the "Stinz" series. It's about how wars get started when no one wants them and both sides think they're right.

All her series continue in "Afterdead," the afterlife of the Desert Peach, where all her characters meet and interact in new and amusing roles. Afterdead collections 1 and 2 are both available at Amazon.com, as are her prose novels. Robotcomics is processing all her books for use on Kindle.

I am not sure where to even start with this book. I will say first that I love graphic novels. Any kind really. The fact that this seemed to be a gay themed one appealed to me. I don't know of that many so I wanted to read this right away. I really didn't know what to expect from The Desert Peach. I guess going in with no expectations was the best way to do it. Right away I liked the art. It is rough around the edges but drawn with expression and detail.I am used to the polished look of current books but I felt that the art just worked for these as it was. As I started reading this I actually cringed but just kept going. I hate gay stereotypes sometimes and this seemed to be one. You know the flouncing gay. I stayed with it and found myself chuckling and really going over each panel with a critical eye. Like I said, I was kinda worried at first but really it pulled me in and I never really wanted to put it down. That says something, right? I have only read the 1rst one so far but I ended up really enjoying it. Well written( with a bawdy sense of humor) and artwork that really fit the book. I look forward to seeing where the series goes. If it does infact take a weighty turn, I think that is a perfect place for this character to go. This book may not appeal to everyone at first but give it a chance there are some merits here.

THE DESERT PEACH is a comic in a class all its own. Hysterical in the early issues, sad and weighty as ***k in its later installments, look anywhere and you'll see fans gushing about the writing, the art, the everything. On the Kindle, I was worried the hand-drawn art and hand-lettered dialogue would be ridiculously unreadable. But boy was I pleasantly surprised - the pages have been artfully divvied into perfectly LEGIBLE kindle-sized comic pages! This comics IS NOT JUST RESIZED. It's fully adapted, and for that, it's a 5-star kindle comic!!!
