4.0 out of 5 stars A very good metal guitar album, April 16, 2001
This review is from: Desert Land (Audio CD)
The greatest strength of Narnia rests in the amazing talents of their guitarist, Carl Grimmark. At times I felt as though I was listening to Yngvie Malmsteen. Grimmark's playing style is fast and very similar to Yngvie's. The vocals on this album are also decent and the production quality is above average.

This album is at its best when they rock hard and fast. This is Narnia's best album and has the highest production quality. If you liked either of their first two albums, then I guarantee you will like this one. The only weak spot on this album is that a few of the songs have a slower tempo and didn't impress me much (other than the fantastic guitar solos). If you like Impellitteri, Yngvie Malmsteen, or just plain guitar shreddin', then you should check out "Desert Land" by Narnia.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Swedish Band ROCKS, April 6, 2001

If you like 80's style metal you will love this album. This CD is so awesome both in sound and production you will not want to take it out of your CD player. It starts out real heavy and just keeps getting heavier all the way through. If you like metallic heavy riffin' rock and roll you will have your mind blown by this brand new release from this GREAT Swedish band. They say metal is coming back and Narnia is for sure one of the best "Leaders of the Pack" Check em out you will not be disapointed that is for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christian neoclassical metal, featuring "Rob Rock" guitarist C.J. Grimmark, June 19, 2011

"Desert Land" is the third album by Christian neoclassical metal band "Narnia" originally released in 2001. The Swedish group was amongst the first to combine neoclassical metal with Christian rock. Essentially one is looking at heavy neoclassical metal that draws on "YJM Rising Force", and "Ring of fire", only with brighter vocal melodies and rather protestant lyrics.

The band is built around lead singer Christian Liljegren (later of "Golden Resurrection") and guitarist C. J. Grimmark who would become better known as the guitarist of Rob Rock. The line up is completed by drummer Andreas Johansson, bassist Jakob Persson and key player Martin Claesson. The album demonstrates a variety of tempos with songs ranging from up-tempo to mid-tempo to ballad; in addition, beyond the neoclassical element, "Desert Land" has a rather progressive essence, due to the various instrumentations and alternating rhythm patterns that are found on most songs.

As hinted above, the main protagonists on the album are Christian, naturally being the singer and C.J. whose guitar provides the riffs, melodies and very accomplished solos. The guy's technical ability in neoclassical metal is undeniable, fluently going through an extensive set of neoclassic scales and themes on "Desert land". Favourite songs include "Angels are crying" "Walking the wire" and "Inner Sanctum". For fans of "Rob Rock", "Driver", "Impellitteri" and "Rising Force", this is a great addition to one's collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Christian Metal Band, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Desert Land (Audio CD)
These guys remind me a lot of Queensryche and their guitar shredding reminds me of earlier Malmsteen. Do I think they are the premier Christian Metal band? No, but they rank up there, not quite with Styper or Eternal Decision but they have held their own. If you like the Metal of the late eighties and early nineties you will like these guys. Although I don't like everything they put out I believe they are a solid Christian band that has a great message. They don't hide their message, they are bold about God and they are very truthful in their lyrics. I would recommend this group to anyone and I own their first 3 cds and I have listened to them over and over again and I still enjoy them. Before you buy be sure to listen to every track because it may not suit what you are looking for but I believe you won't be dissatisfied with them.
