Jewelry is another major product of both the nomadic and settled populations. The decorative patterns and styles are distinctly Central Asian, but they differ slightly from group to group in specific methods of shaping, finish, and materials. Jewelry produced for nomadic groups is different from that produced for people in Bukhara and Samarqand. Jewelry for each population is both for personal adornment and a way to hold and accumulate wealth. The items in the exhibition were selected to show the diversity of weavings, textiles, and jewelry from Central Asia, and the various uses for which they were intended, both functional and decorative. The largest number of pieces in this catalogue are from the collection of Tamor and Elaine Shah, and provide the foundation for the exhibition. The represent weavings of unique quality or rarity, and several of the works are types that have never previously been exhibited or published. A few weavings from other collections have been included to expand the variety of types exhibited.
