returning to postwar germany, donna barr paints a moving and vivid picture of the era. embodying the millions who searched for relatives or information, pfirsch and hans (the orphan who adopted him) have been searching for rosen, a luftwaffe pilot. giving in to hans' demands for regular meals and a home, pfirsch agrees to abandon the search only to find that rosen, true to form, has once again landed on his feet.
