Editorial Reviews

Kaya Project's Desert Phase CD offers world dance music, global electronica chillout music, perfect for yoga beat and ecstatic dance enjoyment.the 4th kaya project album desert phase. follows hot on the heels of & so it goes . this latest voyage into global electronica is inspired by windswept journeys through the sonoran desert, the thar desert and the northern sahara. for desert phase seb taylor and natasha chamberlain draw upon their personal experiences of time spent in these 3 deserts to convey the spirit of these mysterious landscapes and their inhabitants.desert phase includes many of the recordings captured by seb and natasha in arizona, rajasthan and morocco, from the desert dwelling musicians of jaisalmer to moroccan bazaars and atmospheric desert winds recorded amongst the sand dunes in north america. while some of the tracks reflect the timeless, haunting and spacious nature of the desert, many are a reflection of the people that inhabit these areas and are a tribute to their resilience, optimism and joyous attitudes in a seemingly harsh and unforgiving environment . other tracks are rooted in folklore and cinematic myth like the dusty desert/cowboy vibes of ';the stranger rolls in','calico stomp' and 'arizona morning cocoon'.On desert phase a few of the tracks were transformed by the addition of extra musicians back in london like the vocals of shahin badar on 'ummah oum' and the upright bass playing on 'dust devil' by riad abji. the bollywood recording sessions that were part of the second kaya project album elixir were also drawn upon to add a distinctive flavour to this release,as well as backing vocals from both irina mikhailova and deeyah&ndsh;singers whose talents have graced previous kaya project releases. omar faruk tekbilek, who appeared on the elixir album also makes an appearance on desert phase playing ney and zourna on 'eye of the storm' & '23 towers'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a Letdown, July 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Desert Phase (Audio CD)
Noticed there were no reviews of this on Amazon, so...first of all, I like this band's last two albums a lot ("And So It Goes" and "Elixir", with ASIG having a slight edge) and don't get me wrong, this is reasonably good music. Like their previous work, it blends shades of various world music into a more or less rock format, much of it instrumental. However, these songs don't have quite the originality of their previous efforts. Some of the tunes go on a bit long and become somewhat plodding, as if they didn't have quite enough material for a full length and were just padding it out a bit. Which may be exactly what happened, considering many recording studios' penchant for rushing bands to get out new material "while the iron is hot", so to speak. ("We call it riding the gravy train...") It's pleasant enough if you like the genre, but just doesn't have the creative spark that ASIG had. Work longer next time guys, I can wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not filler, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Desert Phase (MP3 Download)
I'm amazed to hear another reviewer describe this album as containing filler. Every track sounds pretty high quality to me. I won't try to compare it with their other albums, but it is definitely a solid release, so if you are even remotely fond of their past releases, I would strongly recommend this album.

I'm still getting into it, so I'll have to come back with a more detailed review. It's at least four stars in my book though, and maybe it will become five with a few more listens.
