4.0 out of 5 stars Edgy and Ecchi..., February 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Desert Punk: The Complete Box Set (Viridian Collection) (DVD)
Ratings are a guesstimate, usually on the "safe side".

Sub-genre: Post-apocalyptic sci-fi/comedy

Situations: Probably R
Language: Probably R
Nudity: PG (but there are groping scenes, clothed, hence the R in situations)
Violence: PG Lots, but nobody ever seems to die and limited blood/not gory.

Disc/Formatting:
Language options: Dub, Sub with separate on/off option. The way it should be.
The usual unforgivable offense: the ads that play on load can't be skipped or bypassed. (Like I need to see ads for stuff I own or will want to watch the same ads every time I watch this DVD for years to come...)
If you can't find disc 1 it's because it's behind the ad flyers on the front cover...

Special Features:
LOTS! And a lot of them are really pretty good (for a change). Common to each or most disks: Desert Parody - Old movie posters re-drawn to the series. 2 per disk, some are very good. Original Japanese extras - some of these are also worth checking out, even if you don't usually like subtitled extras. Life in the Desert - Character Bios (something I generally like). Textless songs, Trailers [Rant time: Desert Punk trailer... aren't I watching it, so why advertise it to me?, Degrassi!, a live action US sit-com (Again!), ads for online and non-online stores... I can't even begin to describe how cheap and cheesy this looks. For the rest, if you are going to waste a minute or so of disc space, at LEAST tell me what it''s about! A basic plot premise, some info on the genre, SOMETHING! So I rate about 90% of the ones I veiwed as wastes of space.] Occasional or single extras include a couple of "As seen on TV" that are dubbed but edited as they were for Japanese TV, an episode (6) of Mr. Stain on Junk Alley, interviews, cast auditions (audio only, no video) and my personal favorite on Disc 6: Bloopers!

Brief synopsis:
It is 200-300 years after the fall of an advanced (Human) civilization and much of the world seems to be desert. The Great Kanto Plains are now the Great Kanto Desert, a place where life is hard and harsh, water is scarce, and life is cheap. Desert Punk, aka The Demon of the Desert is a Handyman, a person who'll take on almost any job, but most often hire out as mercenaries. He uses a handful of ingenious tricks to fight his battles, evening the odds when outnumbered. He is motivated solely by two things, money and large breasts. His pursuit of both often wind up leading him into more trouble that he can handle, especially when Junko, a babe with G+ sized breats and a penchant as a con-artist is involved. He picks up an apprentice, unwillingly at first, after defeating the sniper she served while he was trying to kill Desert Punk for the boost to his reputation. As the series progresses it takes on a more serious plot (but remains a comedy) as more is learned about the governments. The Kanto desert is ruled by four "Oasis" (North, South, East, and West). They rule by technological superiority using recovered tech from the "Dark Ages" (pre-apocalypse). As is predictable, Desert Punk can't avoid getting drawn into trouble and trouble with the government is almost inevitable. I'll leave it there to prevent spoiling the ending which is so expectable it comes as an unexpected surprise.
Overall I'd say this is a "keeper". It's one of the more interesting and thoughtful stories I've seen in a while. Despite being occasionally "ecchi" there's a lot of character development and thought behind the character's motives. I'd have to say it's worth buying to anyone who likes anime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not an anime regular..., March 22, 2011

...but I loved this series. Great entertainment. Great fun. Great for adults without having too many extra weird things going on. Vulgar? Yes. Obscene? Sometimes. But it was by far the best Anime I've seen. Can't go wrong here with this one, well, until you get to the last 2-3 episodes. They didn't really feel like they flowed well.

This is one of those anime that was probably overlooked by the masses. Heck, I didn't even know about it until someone showed me a few episodes. It's a "lewd humor" anime for sure, but it's tasteful. Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious anime (don't watch if you are easily offended), June 15, 2011

This anime is very funny but has a very crude sense of humor that some people might find offensive, if you cant already tell by the cover. There are 24 episodes in total and its pretty long. I got it for 25 and that was a steal even at 30 its a very good buy. If you enjoy big boobs, guns, and crude humor this is perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entire series dedicated to fan-service, March 23, 2011
This review is from: Desert Punk: The Complete Box Set (Viridian Collection) (DVD)
With a slightly skewed storyline and plot, the main delivery comes in the form of two masses of very jiggly flesh. While not as bad as some series that stretch fan-service too far (this one frankly could use just a touch more) the story is not by any means rock solid, but it is at least there and entertaining. The addition of a flat-chested jealous semi-loli character does even out the fan-service quite nicely and frankly the kid has a better personality.

Desert punk was one of the most perverted and laugh out loud moments i've seen in a very long while. The action was well done and pace very well.
