WHO KNEW Georgio Tozzi was the Red Shadow????
Although i am not familiar with the other stars(except Peter "L'il Abner" Palmer), i was happily surprised to hear Pierre/The Red Shadow sung by such a fine voice. Peter Palmer was also terrific singing "I Want a Kiss," which is most times left off the "Desert Song' recordings....
I was EXTREMELY pleased w/the quality of sound as well.
A BIG 2 THUMBS UP for this happy gem!

"The Desert Song"; GTozzi, KBarr
For those who enjoy American operetta (my own favorite type of music), this is very much worth having. Apparantly it was recorded in l958, which sounds
about right. Georgi Tozzi, the voice of EDBecque in the MGaynnor/RBrazzi movie version of "South Pacific", sings the male lead, 'the red shadow,' & does
a very fine job. Kathy Barr is also very good singing the fm lead. Also heard on the recording are Peter Palmer & Warren Galjour, stars of the l950's
& l940's, both very good singers also. The principal flaw is that many numbers are not included, I'm not sure why, perhaps they wanted to keep down
production costs. The total time on the recording is about 5l minutes, so the cd is not filled up. Plenty of other recording exist, so one who likes
this recording but is bothered by the ommissions could easily make a complete recording by adding missing songs, including most of the comedy songs (several
quite good, such as "It"), & have a complete recording for their own use.

I have been searching for the CD of this for decades! This was the only vinyl record that survived my family's adventures traveling and living around the world, and it was a constant friend to me on those lonely outposts with no other kids to play with.......as my book collection gave up the ghost, so did my one remaining record. Sob. I have always wanted to have those (yes, somewhat misogynistic......remember the period this was popular in) songs available to me once again. Tried a couple of other cast versions and a truly terrible DVD offering, but never found anything living up to this version. Amazon came to the rescue once again! While browsing one late night, I stumbled upon this and snatched it up!

"Why did we marry soldiers? Why did we leave our France? To live in old Morocco the lives of maiden aunts?
Our men are always missing, they're never home enough. Just as we start our kissing, the damned old Riffs get rough.
And when to quell that [ruffian] fight, our hubbies need the gall to fight......it seems a silly fuss!
For if they choose to spend their days in fighting, why not let them stay at home and fight with us?"

I guess you had to be there. However, there are some lovely romantic desert love songs and some marching songs that are great.
This cast seem to take the silly content and have great fun with it. If you like old-school musicals, you'll like this crazy, non-PC, historically inaccurate romp!

George Tozzi is one of the great voices of the century and he's at the top of his game here. If you want great singing and a wonderful score, you won't be disappointed with this one. The recording is high quality, too.
