Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Can any poem or collection adequately evoke the sound and fury of battle or with searing images convey to readers the suffering and anguish of violent death? In haiku-like verses, Moore attempts to capture the essence of the Desert Storm conflict. Like pieces of broken glass, these three-line poems offer fragmented perceptions of the war. Some poems express the solitude of death in the desert: "shimmering sun/ drying the G.I.'s blood/ into the sand." The mixture of sensory images is at times very compelling: "another Patriot/ rises to meet the SCUD/ the smell of a latrine." Moore ( Forever Home , LJ 2/15/93) describes the pain of separation as a soldier opens a letter to find the "red paint of his wife's kiss" smeared by the heat. While the United States celebrated an overwhelming military victory in the Persian Gulf conflict (which glorified the successes of "smart" bombs and guided missiles), these poems remind us that the human cost of war should never be underestimated. Recommended for most collections.
