5.0 out of 5 stars a transcendent music experience
I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who ranked this the worst of David Lanz's recordings. On the contrary, it is superior to his other work; while his compositions and playing are always excellent, much of his catalogue epitomizes the blandness that characterizes New Age music as a whole--a mediocrity that severely limits the appeal of New Age and which will...

3.0 out of 5 stars Repetetive, synthetic music.
There are a lot of flaws with in this music. For one thing, it uses a lot of synthesized sounds, and synthesizer technology in 1987 wasn't that great. The real problem is that it's repetitive. On David Lanz's website it says that this was written as background for a nature movie. You can tell. Eagle's Path has a melody that I think is really, really annoying, but maybe...

5.0 out of 5 stars a transcendent music experience, October 16, 1999

I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who ranked this the worst of David Lanz's recordings. On the contrary, it is superior to his other work; while his compositions and playing are always excellent, much of his catalogue epitomizes the blandness that characterizes New Age music as a whole--a mediocrity that severely limits the appeal of New Age and which will ultimately consign most of its recording artists to oblivion. The difference here is without question the injection of energy, nuance, and edgy melody that Paul Speer brings to all his efforts. As with the duo's other outings--Natural States and Bridge of Dreams--Desert Vision is a sonic dreamscape of lush instrumentals that highlight the beautiful interplay of Lanz's piano and Speer's electric guitar. Speer's guitar playing (and recordings in general) seems to combine a concise and melodic pop sensibility with a melencholy sensitivity that perfectly complements the programmatic spirit of this piece as a whole. Like much New Age music, Desert Vision succeeds wonderfully at evoking the natural world of wind-swept vistas and long desert sunsets. But it has an added darkly enigmatic dimension that raises it above the standard "rain forest" fare and makes it an incredibly enjoyable listen--not simply as relaxing background music but also as engaging and accessible songwriting. If you like your New Age subtle and melodic (and without the "cheesiness" often associated with the genre), Desert Vision is well-worth the money. And it makes a superb companion on long car trips across sweeping landscapes.

New to the New Age music scene, I had been looking for a CD that would satisfy my desire for relaxing, yet stimulating sound. A friend of mine let me borrow this CD to me and it fit the bill perfectly. I liked it so much that I plan on checking out some of his other CD's.

This music truly transports me to a tropical paradise, even though it's written with the desert in mind. It is simply breathtaking and relaxing all in one. A very talented duo here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying Without Wings, February 26, 2005

This is definitely one of the 2 best albums I own. It is so relaxing that I cannot remember the last time I was able to listen to the whole album. I have had it since 1989 and have worn out at least two copies on cassette. The only thing better than this album is the video. You do need to be careful when watching the video if you have vertigo, since Eagles Path is just like being there. You can almost feel the wind in your hair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have loved Desert Vision for more than 20 years! A musical oasis..., January 20, 2012
This review is from: Desert Vision (Audio CD)
Desert Vision is a beautiful CD to listen! As someone else here said, not your average New Age pablum. Definitely some moving and beautiful work. Whenever I visit family in the desert Southwest, I always make sure to take this CD with me. It's perfect for listening to when looking outside at the nature in AZ, NM, or any other place in the desert. My favorite cut on this CD is Seguaro.

5.0 out of 5 stars best new age album ever, October 10, 2009
This review is from: Desert Vision (Audio CD)
This is the best new age album i have ever heard. Even my 9 year old and 15 year old like it a lot, a nd even put it on themselves.
I have some music stores in denver metro and in the early 90's i used to play this instore a lot and it sold unbelievably well, no exaggetation when i say we sold over 800 in 2 years. David Lanz and Paul Speer should have thanked jus for so much instore airplay!!! A 10 out of 10.
