As a preschool teacher, I was unsure how my students would take listening to the poetry of Byrd Baylor, but as soon as I began reading 20 preschool children sat still as they heard Desert Voices. The children could relate to what was being said, because they too live in the desert. The book sparked conversation about desert plants, animals, and rocks. The poetry brought the desert to life in their minds. I recomend the book to all children, as a way to introduce poetry, learn about the desert, and enjoy the desert.

I have purchased this book as well as other Byrd Baylor books. After reading them myself, (I am a lover of the southwest)., I purchased more for gifts. Everyone who received one of these books from me has had the same thing to say: "I love it, such simple but wonderful writing & beautiful illustrations." some recipients are adults who share my love of the southwest & they agree that between visits to the southwest, we read these & feel we are there. The children love them because they can read them by themselves & draw their own pictures to put in the books. Several of us are now collectors of Byrd Baylor books.

Inspiring. I love all Byrd Baylor books, but she has truely shown herself in this beautiful book!
