A specialist book with good taxonomy and excellent line drawings. Still the reference text after 50 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert Wild Flowers, April 25, 2008

This review is from: Desert Wild Flowers (Paperback)
This is a book that I have used for more than 30 years. It was extremely helpful while I was working in identifying flowers each week because of my job.

The line drawings are excellent and I would recommend this book for those who want to identify wildflowers in the high desert region of California.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, April 8, 2008

This review is from: Desert Wild Flowers (Hardcover)
This is a fine book written by the last naturalist in California, Edmund Jaeger. Dr. Jaeger knew plants and animals of the desert and he loved being there. This book is for slightly advanced students of plant identification, because it is based on keys and then descriptions of the flora. Each plant has a sketch by Jaeger to go with the species. I am fairly certain Dr. Jaeger has located and drawn each of these plants.
If you plan on using this book often, the hardback copy is a must. I have used mine since 1980 on many trips to the Mohave desert and Death Valley. Identifying wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and birds is a very satisfying pastime and allows parents to educate their children in the wonders of nature. The deserts have a lot of wildlife if one has the patience and tools to look for them.
