This one, design of the 20th century, is a nice visual overview of some of the high points of industrial, commercial, and consumer design. I'm not an expert on design, and a thicker book would be less interesting to me on this topic. These Icon volumes tend to also get borrowed a lot by visitors, and my little ones have started getting interested in them as well.
