Thanks, David!,

This review is from: Reed Design for Early Woodwinds (Publications of the Early Music Institute) (Paperback)
Why am I reviewing this book this morning? That's easy... because I'm using it. Not for the first time, by any means. It's my Bible. This morning I'm trying to "improve" a reed design for a soprano shawm, a little beast of an instrument that has never satisfied me.
I've known David Hogan Smith for years, played music for money and for fun with him, had him make reeds for me for various instruments. He's the best reed-maker I know of, anywhere. So this is not an impartial sort of review; it's both a testimonial and a "thank you". Honestly, I don't enjoy making reeds, and I'll never be as good at it as David, but it's a necessary skill for any historical double-reed player. If you're not an historical double-reed player, find one and marry her/him. We're a jolly bunch. |
