Full of great ideas / great pictures (LOTS of pictures), April 18, 2009
I completely disagree with the other reviewer. We are updating a 100-year old house on a TIGHT, tight budget (an entirely new kitchen for under $500! - my husband is doing most of the work, but it's really not that difficult when you're open to recycled materials & creative ideas).
My husband & I picked up this book for a number of reasons. First, because we tend to like the "Creative Homeowners" book series. They always have great pictures, lots of ideas, and you can always find them pretty cheap.
Also, we have been interested in concrete kitchen counter tops ever since we saw them on an HGTV show. They're durable, anti-microbial, eco-friendly, and they're beautiful.
This book had lots of ideas for us (colors/types/sizes/textures), but we found lots of other unique uses for concrete - in many ways you wouldn't think.
We really like the idea of concrete & stone because they're eco-friendly, non-toxic, safe for pets & children, and it's very inexpensive!
It includes ideas and recommendations of a huge variety of unique materials for every room in the house, as well as outside: concrete, stone, soapstone, slate, granite, marble, & tile. And, they provide a lot of information about the materials - where it's best, how to install, how well it weathers, etc.
For me, I use books like this to inspire me and give me ideas. We never hire home decorators and say "build me this thing I saw in a home decorating book!". So many of these ideas can be built easily, from recycled parts or with existing materials (i.e., you can resurface existing counter tops with concrete, tint it any matching color you wish, and the materials cost just pennies per linear foot!).
I give it a strong recommendation.
