Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Knitters who want to consider doing their own design work will find no easier way to begin than with baby clothes. Bliss, whose patterns always have an elegant simplicity, writes in the introduction to this collection about her philosophy of design when it comes to babies: think about practical elements and “combine style and wearability.” How to accomplish these goals is detailed in chapter introductions to her projects. Although some of the advice seems obvious (don’t make baby clothes from scratchy yarns), her use of crisp visuals of swatches and techniques brings the concepts to life. And there are many tips knitters might not have thought of (“Babies don’t have much by way of thumbs . . . thumbless mitts are all they need”) and good ideas for sprucing up an everyday item such as a hat: add animal ears. The projects themselves—simple sweaters, blankets, caps, scarves, and booties—have much appeal. Information about different shapes and sizing will help the new designer. As always, Bliss’ photographs are appealing and sharp, but more views of an item would be helpful. --Ilene Cooper

4.0 out of 5 stars Knit and seam January 28, 2011
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
The patterns are very lovely and there's something for both boys and girls. The author also educates readers how to choose yarn for babies and toddlers, how to design cloth for babies and toddlers (such as what kind of collar and shape of the top etc.) so the little ones enjoy wearing the handknits.

All patterns are knitted separately then seam together. If you don't mind that, I think it's a great book.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK for beginners January 19, 2012

Very ordinary book about knitting for babies although there are a few very nice patterns. Most of the advice in this book is obvious, such as knit large to give children room to grow. Its just common sense.

3.0 out of 5 stars Baby knitting anyone October 29, 2010
By Marge
Design It, Knit It: Babies One way to practice using stitch patterns is to work on small garments, such as baby clothes. Debbie Bliss' new book offers that opportunity. Baby projects are small enough to finish quickly, but large enough to get the idea of how a pattern will work. The Bliss book lacks charts and only relies on knitted patterns and I find that a drawback. But the patterns themselves are enchanting. The sizes offered are generous, since there is rarely a need to knit an item that does not allow a baby to grow. One of the patterns I think I might work up is the Garter-Stitch Cardigan just to have in case I need a shower gift.

A nice addition to your knitting library.
Easy patterns to follow. The little boys "moose" sweater is adorable.
I haven't done alot of intarsia knitting and this book is a good start.
It gives you knitter's graph paper and starter charts for the alphabet letters.
Looking forward to using this book quite a bit.
