Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

To the growing list of how-to books on curtains and blinds (e.g., Yvonne Rees's Quick and Easy Curtains and Blinds, LJ 1/96, and Carol Parks's Complete Book of Window Treatments and Curtains, Lark, 1994), Luke brings her expertise as head of a soft furnishings school. She begins each book with clear, well-illustrated instructions on basics such as sewing techniques, measuring, equipment, and set-up. She then proceeds with directions for the simplest treatments?unlined curtains and roller blinds?continues with more complicated designs?such as interlined drapes and Austrian blinds?and concludes with embellishments and decorations. A glossary and care instructions are also included. Missing are illustrations of the various hardware used for curtain and shade hangings that is included in Parks's book, which prevents these books from being truly comprehensive. Still, these are solid additions where more window treatment instruction books are needed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay for Basic Curtains, April 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Design & Make Curtains & Drapes (Hardcover)
This book was okay for examples of basic drapes without valances. Emphasis was on hand sewing techniques instead of machine sewing. I can't speak for the reader of this review but I use the machine for practically everything. Also, not much instruction or examples of decorative embellishments which lift a drape from bland to something special. Bottomline: Okay if you wish to make simple drapes (by HAND) without swags, jabots, valances, etc. If you are looking for something more -- purchase another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars design and make curtains and drapes, July 20, 2004

This review is from: Design & Make Curtains & Drapes (Hardcover)
This a good beginners book. It gives a lot of good basic instructions. The pictures and directions are clear and easy in understand. And although it does seem to focus a bit on hand sewing instead of the machine, there is no reason why you can't use either one to make your curtains. I especially like the large full color photos of the finished products.
