Book Description

January 1, 2008 Design Matters
The nuts and bolts of effective brochure design.

The design bar is at an all-time high for those brave enough to participate in the industry. Today's designers must be clear on all the steps necessary to create work that stands out in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Unfortunately, most design books only focus on type, color, and layout issues. The Design Matters series takes a more in-depth approach, allowing designers to learn not only how to create work that is aesthetically appealing, but also strategy-driven and smart.

This book focuses on developing, creating and implementing brochure designs, while others in the series dissect packaging, logos, publications, and letterhead systems. Each book offers all the essential information needed to execute strong designs in concert with beautiful and well-crafted examples, so readers can successfully hit the mark every time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised! April 9, 2010

Prior to my ordering this book, there wasn't much information to be had on whether this book was worth purchasing. Given the author's pedigree, I decided to take a chance and I have to say that I'm glad I did.

The first half of the book is filled with tips and ideas for creating brochures and procuring artwork and other design elements. Most of this is basic knowledge but, if this is your first time creating brochures or it has been awhile since your last brochure layout, the information in here is wonderful. The second half of the book consists of Case Studies and a Gallery. I always enjoy reading through case studies as it is fun to read what design considerations were in play when the brochure was being constructed. The Gallery section provides additional examples, which are very nice for those seeking inspiration. The example photographs are all in color throughout the book and are printed at sufficient size to allow you to be able to see the designs without squinting or hunting for your magnifying glass.

Overall, I thought this book was a good addition to my growing collection of print-related books. For the beginner or intermediate reader, it provides good, solid advice that everyone should know. For those looking for inspiration, I thought the examples were very well selected and fun to browse.

I give this five stars because it's a beautifully illustrated book with amazing brochures.

I simply want to help others avoid the mistake I made when buying this. I'm an aspiring copywriter, not a graphic designer. I was hoping to learn how to create and write basic brochures. I'm no further ahead in this goal after "reading" this book.

There's very little writing, here. It's presented more like a catalog of design contest entries. I don't know if these were in contests, but they certainly look like that. These are some of the most impressive brochure designs you will find. And very expensive to produce!

If you're a graphic designer looking for inspiration to create fabulous, avant garde, cutting edge designs worthy of competition, look no further. This book will not disappoint.

If you're looking for a book to show you how to create or write the basic kind of brochures most businesses use, e.g., the tri-fold, because they can't afford to spend big money on over-sized, die-cut brochures with all kinds of amusing bells and whistles, this book will do nothing for you. (sorry for the long sentence!)

I'm not criticizing the book. It's wonderful for what it is. It just wasn't that clear to me what it is in the description.

Great examples of fabulous designs. Zero examples of basic, widely used brochures.

I truly hope this helps.

Very good giving background information about how designers come up with ideas and over come challenges while designing brochures. I wish it had more examples of actual full brochures instated of just snapshots.
