This review is from: Design in Nature: Learning from Trees (Paperback)
This book is actually a detailed study of reducing stress concentrations found in structures. The author arrived at these simple rules by studying trees, and his results are validated using extensive finite element modeling by others. The practical value is clear: as we move away from manufacturing by removing metal from large blocks (machining) to build-up of structures by additive processes (metal powder sintering, polymer curing lithography, etc) using CAD models, his approaches can be applied easily. The book is very well illustrated with 205 figures, many in color. |
