Book Review For Design Through Discovery 6th Edition:
The majority of the pictures are in black and white. Between pages 206 and 207 there are 76 Color Plates (only 76 pictures are in color). While reading the book, you will be directed to look at one of the color plates. Buy this book if you are looking for very brief explanations about the elements and principles of design. If you are looking for a thorough book on Design then I recommend buying Design Basics by David Lauer & Stephen Pentak (read my review for the 7th edition) or Foundations Of Art And Design by Lois Fichner Rathus (read my review for the 1st edition). Here is the Table Of Contents for Design Through Discovery:

PART ONE DESIGN AS UNIVERSAL REALITY
Chapter 1 The Essence Of Design
Chapter 2 The Design Process
PART TWO THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Chapter 3 Line
Chapter 4 Space
Chapter 5 Shape And Form
Chapter 6 Texture
Chapter 7 Color
PART THREE THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Chapter 8 Unity And Variety
Chapter 9 Balance, Rhythm, And Emphasis
Chapter 10 Proportion And Scale
PART FOUR DESIGN IN ACTION
Chapter 11 The Influence Of Materials On Design
Chapter 12 Forming Techniques
Chapter 13 Structure And Decoration
PART FIVE DESIGN FOR LIVING
Chapter 14 Our Personal World (clothing, home)
Chapter 15 Design And Technology
Chapter 16 Design In The Marketplace
Chapter 17 Design For The Environment

This was another book intended for a college class; the contents seemed self-evident. I have had other design courses, so to be fair, I should just say this book is a very basic level and rather boring to get through. I would like to think good design should be enjoyable no matter what level you are at - the pedestrian layout didn't help. Save your money - better to take students to an art gallery and discuss why design works and why it doesn't.

My daughter needed this book for one of her interior design courses. The campus bookstore nor any others in town had the book. Very happy to find it on Amazon!
