This is the best book, bar none, on how to use type in graphic design. Dair shows the different kinds of contrast, harmony, and emphasis that make typography effective; just browsing through these pages is inspiration enough, but reading them takes you much deeper. Although the technology Dair was writing about is obsolete now, nothing has changed in his insight into the relationships between letters and their meaning.

It's worth getting the hardcover if you can; the later paperback editions were trimmed a bit tight. But any edition is worth having.
