This book, coupled with the steel code (either ASD or LRFD) and "Steel Structures" by Salmon and Johnson, will complete any structural engineer's steel design library. The amount of information in this book far exceeds many books that are 4 to 5 times as expensive. This book is a must have.

FYI: You can buy this book brand new for around 20$ directly from the Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation (the publisher). Just go to their website.

This is an incredible resource. I'm a Structural Engineer in the Nuclear Industry and this book is as indispensable as the Steel Manual.

Great book, and an important addition to a mechanical or structural engineer's library.

One note of caution: the book is available new from the publisher's (The James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation's) website. Shipping fees are a lot higher, but you might get a better deal than you can see from resellers on Amazon.

Again like all the other engineers in the world that appreciate this book. I was pleased to begin reading blodgett's book page for page. This is one book any engineer should read as a milestone in their career.

This book from 1966 is an absolutely essential steel design reference. As another reviewer stated, along with Salmon and Johnson (5th Edition is now Salmon, Johnson, and Malhas) and the combined ASD/LRFD AISC steel design manual, your steel design reference library is nearly complete. You may also need the AISC seismic design and detailing manuals too.

I do not mean to imply that this is an easy to understand reference. I teach steel design 1 using McCormac and Csernak (have used Segui too) rather than this or Salmon, et al, because the material presented, while less thorough, is easier for the first-time student to comprehend. For the more advanced student or practitioner, the thorough and complete treatment you get from this book and from Salmon, et al, are really valuable. Given the relative low cost of this book, owning it is a no-brainer if you are a structural steel design engineer.

That said, even with the deserved 5-star review, I wish that they would do an updated version that references the modern LRFD limit-states, where appropriate, and that adds an index. I would buy the book a second time to get an index.

Buy this book new from Lincoln Electric - James F. Lincoln Foundation. It is heavily subsidized so it is on $22 new. This is an excellent book. It was written in the 60's so the design procedures have changed slightly. With experience the methods are easily adapted to the new building codes.

I've designed hundreds of structures with this book which now reside in every state in the US. They have all performed exactly as intended throughout earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and explosions. Thanks Omer!
