5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book, March 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Design For Wholeness (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. Well written in easy to understand terms. Explains where the anger comes from and shows how you can choose to express it in destructive or constructive ways. Shows how low self-esteem and hostility are connected. Gives models and reflections to help develop self awareness and self acceptance.

I am a Catholic working in ministry. I got this book for self growth, but also to help me relate to others in my work. It is written from a faith-based, Catholic perspective. Because we all face conflict--pretty much everyday--it is helpful to understand the source of conflict and the big picture. When someone gets angry with us, it is easy to just react to them angrily, too. This book tries to show what is going on in that anger, and what the roots of it might be.

What makes this book so great, as other reviewers have said, is that it is very clearly and succinctly written, and it is based on very strong research. It will stand the test of time. A book isn't worth much if you can't get yourself to finish reading it, right?

This one is written in such a way that I would read a chapter and need to sit and think long and hard about it, and then journal about where I saw it challenging me and where it affirmed what I already do. I found it helpful for showing me what might be going on under the surface in others--which helped my ability to empathize with their situation. If the underlying roots of their anger stem from low self esteem, then that helps me understand how I should respond, and it gives me a boost of patience because I understand that person is hurting inside. They aren't necessarily just a mean person who is trying to make life difficult for everyone else.

Lastly, another strong part of the book is that they use a lot of examples/case studies. I cannot say too much or too often that this book is useful, and it is a practical guide that should be read and re-read by anyone who works with people (which is pretty much all of us!)

Great book. Simple, small, profound. Excellent scholarship underlies the content, yet book is very accessible. I've read it a few times, underlined my copy many times.
