DesignCAD Pro 2000's previous incarnation, DesignCAD 97, was on our WinList for more than a year due to its power and performance. This new version is faster, more customizable and has new drawing commands. In addition, it costs $599.95-just $100 more than the 97 version and about $3,000 less than AutoCAD, its closest competitor on our WinList.

Most of the improvements are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. You can now draw symbols as bounding boxes (simple boxes that represent complex images) to greatly speed redraws. In addition, DesignCAD Pro 2000 allows you to make custom menus, toolboxes and macros, and it adds support for Visual Basic and Visual C++ programs.

Other new features include the ability to lock and unlock all layers in a CAD drawing; an improved, dynamically adjustable print pREVIEW:; new right-click mouse functionality; and version-specific AutoCAD DXF and DWG file support.

DesignCAD's 3D rendering features are still top-notch. It includes more than 50 textures for surface 3D object rendering, and I found it easy to perform 3D editing. Its 2D tools are strong as well.

DesignCAD Pro 2000 has tightened and neatened its basic interface to maximize the drawing area and decrease the space taken up by dialogs. This is typical of the program's focus on ease of use, and it's one of the reasons DesignCAD Pro has a wider appeal than most CAD programs. It's suitable for basic home drawing and planning, as well as architectural CAD and mechanical engineering drawings.

Although it's not as powerful as rival AutoCAD in every regard, DesignCAD covers about 90% of the ground that AutoCAD does, for less money. It makes our WinList as a good general-purpose CAD program at a reasonable price.

If you're looking for Design Cad 2000, this isn't it. It's the tutorial ! This product has been advertised wrong in the catalog.
