Complex theological truth in everyday language. (Christian Library Journal 2004-06-03)

From the Back Cover

“The greatest goal in the believer’s life is not his own enjoyment of his salvation. His highest goal is not learning the truths of Scripture, nor even teaching and preaching the Word. His greatest goal is to live Jesus Christ so that men may know the Father.”

Against the flow of consumerist Christianity, Dr. Pentecost reminds the reader that the Christian life is not primarily about Jesus being your best friend, finding the keys to happiness, or just making it to heaven. In this insightful look at godliness, one of America’s most respected and practical theologians strikes at the heart of the calling that encompasses every aspect of life.

Life in Christ redefines our purposes and reshapes our perspectives. With our eternal destination secured, we embark on a lifelong journey toward godliness, being changed into the image of Christ as we live a life empowered by the Holy Spirit. Centered around Scripture, Designed to Be Like Him takes you step-by-step through a theologically sound pattern for maturing in Christ. Fellowship, conduct, conflict, and maturity are all discussed in detailed, yet understandable, language.

J. Dwight Pentecost is Distinguished Professor of Bible Exposition, Emeritus, at Dallas Theological Seminary where he has served since 1955. He holds a B.A. from Hampten-Sydney College, and both the Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary. His many works include Design for Discipleship, Your Adversary the Devil, The Divine Comforter, and Thy Kingdom Come.

Dr. Pentecost's little book is extraordinary in scope, and yet very readable. I read this book about 20 years ago---at the time it was out of print---and came to the conclusion then (and still believe) that outside the Bible, this is the best book on the Christian faith in print. Dr. Pentecost uses scriptural references for all of his conclusions/recommendations. I have given away over a dozen through the years and frequently return to the worn and tattered pages of my copy.

If you only buy one book on Christian faith, this one would be the best.

Highly recommended.

I found this book to be theologically correct regarding the fruit of our salvation. Much is written today about the "fruit" of salvation but not all of what has been published is biblically correct. Pentecost brings out how our nature has already been changed and how our will was affected by our salvation. He does not have a passive approach to the Christian life but at the same time he does not sound legalistic. This book is well balanced and very profitable for the Christian.

I ran across this book years ago in a used bookstore bargain bin - and what a find it turned out to be. As Christians, we learn that our purpose in life is 'to glorify God', but we don't really wrap our minds around what that statement means. Pentecost points out that when God's glory is put on display, there is always some revelation of His character. When we 'glorify God' then, we are to put His character on display. Thus the title "Designed to Be Like Him". Man was created in God's image to bring Him glory, and we do this whenever, through the Trinitarian work of God, our sinful lives are re-shaped into the image of Christ.

This book is definitely in my personal "Top Ten" list of life changing books. Get it, read it, apply it.
