This review is from: Designed For Success: The 10 Commandments for Women in the Workplace (Hardcover)
This is a beginning overview of a number of different topics, but doesn't go into enough detail on any one of them. If you're looking for suggestions on how to dress, for instance, this doesn't go much further than "dress a level up" and look good. There is a bit more on negotiating skills, but there are other books that go into far greater detail, even for professionals just starting out.

Each chapter starts with a biblical quote, and the author references God often enough that it starts to feel like this belongs in the Christian section. Fine if you don't mind this, but quite alienating if you are either not Christian or don't appreciate mixing religion in with workplace discussions.

For productivity, I'd recommend Getting Things Done & for workplace dress and behaviors (for men and women) I'd recommend You've Only got Three Seconds by Camille Lavington instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good info, terrific ideas, entertaining to read!, February 8, 2008

Dondi's wisdom and sense of humor combine to deliver really insightful, powerful and useful lessons on growing your career. It may have been written for women, but there's a lot in here for us guys as well! Her humor and story telling style make reading this book a delight... it's not a bitter pill - or a "pill" at all - more like a night at the movies! If you've ever had the pleasure of hearing Dondi speak in person (as I have), you can actually "hear" her in your head... her terrific personality shines through... no kidding! My job is training and development in a 500+ person industrial company, and I've purchased copies for every woman in our organization. I recommend this to anyone who really wants to maximize their career potential... and have a blast doing it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Condescending and a waste of time - unless you really ARE a doormat., March 12, 2009
This review is from: Designed For Success: The 10 Commandments for Women in the Workplace (Hardcover)
I read a lot of business books, and I thought this one would have some fresh insights into networking and climbing the ladder as a woman. Rather, I found its stereotypes condescending and inappropriate. Some of my favorites:

"Women are often 'hard-wired' in ways that make successful business practices less natural or automatic."

"In the workplace there is a higher premium on critical and strategic thinking. This creates a real deficit for women. What is valued and respected most may not be what women are most naturally inclined to."

"We earn what we believe we are worth and what we negotiate for. This can be daunting for women because we really don't like to negotiate. When men hear a salary offer, they believe the negotiations have begun, and they actually look forward to it!"

(...For the record, I know plenty of men AND women who hate to negotiate.)

Scumaci tells women not to have negative self-talk, but in the same breath she reinforces it with all her stereotypes! She basically claims women are naturally inept in business and men are natural-born leaders. She has gives no research to back this up, other than forced Bible quotes, contrived to fit the topic. I couldn't even finish this awful book.

Women, do yourselves a favor and read inspirational stories about women AND men in business. This book will only serve to reinforce any doubts you had about your abilities.

Or perhaps "my tiny little woman brain" just can't grasp the high-level concepts of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help for both women and men in the workplace, February 5, 2008
This review is from: Designed For Success: The 10 Commandments for Women in the Workplace (Hardcover)
I have read this book from cover to cover and have recommended it to both friends and family. I wish that I had this help during transitions and change in my previous job because this would have been a tremendous help in giving me better direction and a more positive way to handle difficult situations. I applaud Dondi for her brilliant advise and believe that many more people will receive a huge benefit from her insite that she has captured between the pages of this book. Thank heaven people like Dondi are here to help all of us.

I own this book and I love it. If you are a woman in business, this is a must have. It's a brilliant reference book that needs to sit on your shelf and be available to you for any situation.

In this book, you'll learn how to better manage your time (or your relationship to time!), your resources, how to deal with bad bosses, difficult co-workers, maximize your potential, make yourself invaluable...I could go on and on!

As a business owner I have already put many of the ideas and suggestions into play and I want more! My book is filled with notes in the margins, highlighted sections and bookmarks. It's been better studied than half of my text books from college.

The author feels like a friend, a mentor, and a personal trainer all wrapped up together as she encourages and exhorts you on how to be a woman AND succeed.

Five stars. No downsides. Brilliantly done. Can't wait for more from this author!!

I highly recommed this book, particularly to women who are looking for a practical, down to earth manual for succeeding in their careers.
The author has a very entertaining, and at the same time, direct style for discussing and providing suggestions on how to tackle the challenges that women (who want to make it to the top) face at work.
