Editorial Reviews

Review

"Designer Dirty Laundry is a light, cozy-style mystery written in a breezy manner. The murder plot is nicely set up, the suspects all credibly drawn, and Samantha Kidd an engaging amateur sleuth."-Mysterious Reviews

"The way the story unravels isn't exactly what you might expect and there are some interesting twists to how the end finally pans out. It keeps you at the edge of your seat. I love the description of clothes in this book, like I said to begin with, if you love fashion, pick this up!"-Los Angeles Mamma Blog

"There is a lot of fashion talk in the book, as this is an area in which the author has significant expertise, and...the reader gets to know about the big buckets of activity in the fashion value chain and some industry trends. Overall, an impressive cozy mystery from a promising author."
-Mystery Tribune

...the book is enriched by the author's cleverly phrased prose and convincing characterization. The surprise ending will satisfy and delight many mystery fans. A diverting mystery that offers laughs and chills --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Diane Vallere lives in a world where popcorn is a breakfast food and Doris Day movies are revered for their cultural significance. After over twenty years in the fashion industry, she now writes full time from her home in Los Angeles, California. She launched her own detective agency at ten years old and has maintained a passion for shoes, clues, and clothes ever since.

More About the Author

I'm a former fashion buyer turned mystery writer, trading fashion accessories for accessories to murder. I was bit by the mystery bug as a kid reading Trixie Belden, Connie Blair, and The Three Investigators. Now I'm writing three series: the Style & Error Mysteries, the Mad for Mod Mysteries, and the upcoming Material Witness Mysteries.

The Style & Error Series features former fashion buyer turned amateur sleuth Samantha Kidd. Books in that series include DESIGNER DIRTY LAUNDRY, BUYER, BEWARE, and THE BRIM REAPER. (A short story, "Just Kidding," tells the story of how Samantha first met shoe designer Nick Taylor). Book 4, SOME LIKE IT HAUTE, will be out in late 2014.

The Mad for Mod Mystery Series, recently acquired by Henery Press, feature Doris Day-loving, Midcentury Modern interior decorator Madison Night and her faithful Shih Tzu Rock. Books are PILLOW STALK and THAT TOUCH OF INK. A prequel novella, "Midnight Ice," can be found in OTHER PEOPLE'S BAGGAGE. Look for the third book in this series, WITH VICS YOU GET EGGROLL, in 2015.

The Material Witness Mystery Series, will be coming from Berkley Prime Crime in November 2014. These feature Polyester Monroe, who has inherited a fabric store (and a couple of questions about her family's past) from her great uncle. First up is SUEDE TO REST.

I love to hear from readers! You can connect with me on twitter (@dianevallere), or say hi on facebook. Telepathy works, too. Sometimes.

This book has too much graphic & unnecessary sex scenes for my taste.

Enjoyable albeit silly mystery with a heroine who can't make a good decision to save her life. If you like strong, resourceful, smart women, this isn't her!

Diane Vallere takes us into the world of designer clothes, department store life, and murder. And it isn't the murder of being the first in line for the biggest department store sale of the year. When Samantha Kidd reports for work at her new job as a trend specialist at an upscale department store, she expects her new job could be a challenge. She didn't expect the challenge would be to prove she didn't murder her new boss. Some employees might be tempted to slay their bosses, but on their first day? "Designer Dirty Laundry" is a fast-paced, enjoyable read with great characters and lots of humor. Set aside some time to read this uninterrupted--you won't want to put it down.

This novel grabbed my attention in the first chapter. Samantha Kidd stumbles upon a dead body and ends up the prime suspect for his murder. This designer turns detective to clear her name but the more she investigates, the more involved she seems to become. With all the twists and turns you will quickly finish this book. I hope Diane Vallere brings fun, quirky Samantha Kidd back to life in another novel soon.

Pillow StalkI've already pre-ordered Ms Vallere's next novel Pillow Stalk.

This is a really fun mystery with a chick lit feel. I loved it. The fashion aspects of the novel feel very real--you can tell the author has spent time in the fashion industry. Samantha Kidd is a character you want to see succeed. Something about this novel evoked nostalgia in me. In some ways it felt like a read of a script for an old Doris Day comedy--and I mean that in the best way. This book was like comfort food for me.

Diane Vallere's debut novel, Designer Dirty Laundry, hit the runway recently and is a total trendsetter. Her style alone is worth the read, but there is a terrific plot stitched together with subtle clues that kept this reviewer guessing until the mask was finally stripped away from the real killer at the end.

Vallere's fashion sense makes this book visually appealing as she sets up the story of Samantha Kidd, a fashion buyer working in New York City who moves back to her hometown to find herself. She has been offered a job at the trendiest store in town by one of the top designers in the country. The grand old man of design approached her outside of the store and all of their meetings were slightly sub-rosa, so when she goes to work the first day, nobody is expecting her. And when she sees her new boss's body slumped in the elevator, Samantha and Nick Taylor, a high-ticket shoe designer, are the only witnesses. This fashionista has a quick wit like when she finds herself in the local police station and she comments on how "the morning had left me more vice squad than fashion police." This is a fun gal.

But there is no body and the police start thinking Samantha is just a nut, because she has seen a body that nobody can find, an emergency technician who wasn't there, a laptop that's missing, and has a job nobody can verify was ever offered. Samantha starts thinking, "Nobody had warned me that crimes of fashion were to be a part of my job."

She meets a young guy at work who seems to take an interest in her story. She had actually helped him out back in their high school days and he never forgot, but his help might not be the kind she needs.

I love the Style and Error Mystery Series. They start with a zip and continue through the whole book. If you love clothes, like humor, and the reality of life on the lighter side, you'll want to read these.

New beginnings...that's all Samantha Kidd wanted when she moved back to her home town of Ribbon, PA where she meets a top executive of a new retail store who offers her a job as a trend specialist.
Sam, former shoe buyer in NYC, wants to make an impression on her first day at her new job, but instead she finds her boss murdered in an elevator.
Now Sam puts her life in danger and sets out to find the killer with clues and notes left from her murdered boss. While gathering information Sam gets assistance from Nick, a shoe vendor she knew from her days in NYC and an old high school classmate, Eddie.
Lots of fun in this series and very enjoyable. Samantha "The Kidd" is a funny character that keeps the book moving along at a fast pace. Looking forward to reading Buyer Beware the 2nd book in the "Style and Error" series by Diane Vallere.
