There are five problems with the light. The photograph has the "attachment pads" edited out. That is because they are jacked-up, and must be oriented at a 45 degree angle to install the wiring box. They should be horizontal. The wiring box has no standard electrical installation holes, so you can't use standard electrical components to mate the light to. The light vapor seal glass is slightly too long. It interferes with the explosion proof cage, so the cage does not install correctly or at a nice centerline orientation front to back. The cage will be cocked because you cannot seat it on the intended 3rd detent to snap it in place. The wiring is #18 braided aluminum? Twisting this wire to 14-2 solid copper is tough and may not be to code. The wiring should have connection screws.

I was looking for a practical, indestructable light fixture for my backyard. It didn't need to be pretty, just tough and utilitarian. This fit the bill.

Amazon's dimensions are incorrect. The bulb housing is about 8.5" in height and the diameter of the mount is 4.5".

Pros:
-Solid metal case and fixture. It won't break if you throw a basketball at it.
-The tempered glass housing is very thick.
-It illuminates the area immediately below the fixture which is important when you want to step out into a dark backyard.
-There is a thick rubber seal that prevents water from entering the wiring compartment.
-Easy to install.
-Accepts a standard CFL (compact fluorescent) bulb. There is no bulb included.

Cons:
-Very utilitarian and industrial looking which might not fit your decor.

After reading one of the previous reviews I was concerned about the mounting problems he had encountered, but I purchased anyway I just had to try it myself. Yes the previous reviewer is correct the mounting holes do not line up correctly with a normal electrical wall box. The fixture was designed to be mounted with the included surface mount box - bummer. After being a bit disappointed, but not willing to be defeated or use the ugly surface mount box I began to work on a way to mount them. Our house has a stucco exterior so I proceeded to take the old fixtures off and hold the new ones up and marked where each of the four holes would have to line up on the stucco. I used a masonry bit and very carefully drilled four holes into just the stucco and carefully put in a wall anchor. These new holes and anchors worked perfect to mount the fixtures. Remember to take off the rubber gasket from the surface mount box and use it between the fixture and the stucco to make a weather tight seal, a little silicone didn't hurt either. I used various wattages (9w and 13w) of the new Phillips mini twist compact fluorescent bulbs (Home Depot - 4 pack for $7.99) in the fixtures and couldn't be more pleased with the light output and how they look. I installed a total of 9 fixtures around the exterior of the house. Building codes can vary across the country I suggest you check yours to ensure your installation complies.

Perfect front porch lamps for my beach cottage. Looks like they came off an old tugboat. The glass is beautiful and the whole structure is solid.

I had zero problems hooking it up. That's because I used the mounting box that came with it instead of jimmying it directly to the wall like some of the other reviewers did.

Yes, It is true, and strange, that the photo doesn't show the mounting box that attaches behind it. The mounting box is a cylindrical "can" as wide as the attachment plate shown in the photo and a little less than 1.5" deep. Personally, I think my lamps look better with the the mounting boxes, more like some kind of found nautical relics. I'll post a photo one of these days.

Bottom line: Beautiful, solid, and functional.

I ordered a few of these for replacing older lights outside of my garage. They were easy to install and are weather proofed. Older style light bulbs fit with no problems but the florescent bulbs I put in these were a tight fit.

Really nice light fixture and is built well. It has real glass, not some plastic piece. It goes together easy and comes with everything you need. Real nice piece.

I was looking for a replacement security light for the side of my garage. I got tired of having to continously replace those motion sensor units with the 100 to 150 watt halogen flood lamps every couple of years for various malfunctions. I wanted to change to something simple. I had in mind almost this exact type of light. Of course the local "Big Box" home center had nothing like this so I tried Amazon. The only thing I was looking for that this light didn't have was a "frosted" bulb enclosure to diffuse the light somewhat. That was easily taken care of with a couple of light coats of some "frost" spray paint. I decided to mount the light without the included mounting/junction box (see attached photos) which had some weird type of screw hole locations as described in other reviews but be advised that there is no ground connection without using the "mounting box" unless you have access to the inside of the wall where you can use a longer mounting bolt and connect ground to that. The installation of the light was over vinyl siding, because of that the base gasket did not seal 100% so I used a little silicone to insure the seal of the base against the siding. I wired the fixture up to a timer so I wouldn't have to go out to the garage and turn it on and off. I installed a 100 watt (26 watts) equivelant CFL light that is using much less than the 200 to 300 watts of light that was previously used on the motion sensor unit that wouldn't shut off. The whole mounting process took only about 20 minutes or so. Very pleased with the Designers Edge L-1707 Industrial fixture.

Ordered three of these lights for my house. Looks just like the picture. Easy to install and the quality is good.

I purchased and installed three of these lights for use under my deck. The light fixtures are well made, waterproof and rugged. I had no issues with the installation and would definitely purchase again.

Great light. Easy to install. Fast shipping. I got it for outside our garage on an alley. I'll probably get one for the other side too. A-OK!
