Designers Edge Security Light,
By CJD (PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Designers Edge L1755 65-Watt Mogul Base Fluorescent Dusk to Dawn Security Light Fixture (Tools & Home Improvement)
This light is fairly easy to assemble and comes with all of the necessary screws, lag bolts, etc., except wire nuts. There is a white wire and black wire to join to the power supply wires. The ground from the power supply wire attaches to a ground screw on the fixture. The connection is covered with a thin, and I do mean thin, cover plate. There is nothing robust about this fixture. The reflector and acrylic shield are also thin gage parts. They claim the 65 watt fluorescent lamp is equivalent to a 300 watt light. I have a 175 watt mercury vapor lamp in my yard. The fluorescent fixture gives off about half to 2/3 the amount of light given off by the mercury vapor. The area under the fluorescent fixture is well lit but the light doesn't seem to project as well. I don't know about their test data but I would say a comparison with a 100 to 150 incandescent bulb would be more accurate. The light is white. The light has a photocell to turn it on and off that is located in the side of the housing. The cell faces west on my fixture. The light turns on about the same time my mercury vapor lamp comes on, but turns off about the time the sun starts coming over the horizon. This is about an hour later than I would turn it off.
Don't buy this light for energy savings. The bulb may save 10% on energy cost but the extra hour the light stays on eliminates the savings.

Works well, stays on longer in the morning than I would like, and if there is a "dark rain day" will stay on. Other than that is an excellent product. I had purchased some in the past that were from a different mfg., and were all "plastic", ballast cards failed excessively. So far this unit has worked flawlessly. Would recommend.

Light is very lightweight, not as sturdy as I expected but the light was easy to install and is working great.

In this day and age we should not be making outdoor light fixtures like this. It is an extremely poor design because over half the light is not pointed at the ground. A large majority of it is shining upwards to light the clouds. Why create a light with an efficient bulb and then use it to light the sky? Furthermore the design will result in light shining directly in your face when looking at it so it will be even more difficult to see objects beyond it. This is the same affect as someone shining a flashlight in your face. You would do much better off finding a fixture that is "full-cutoff". Those types of fixtures shine all the light downwards where you need it and also results in being able to use a bulb that is half the wattage as one that is required in a fixture like this one and still produce the equivalent amount of light where you need it.

The security light failed in a short time. I replaced the light "bulb" just to make sure it was the bulb and not the light itself. So now I have to remove it and get another brand of security light.
