4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Worklight
I purchased this lamp about a year ago, and it's reasonable decent: a year outside and it has withstood the elements, etc., and provides good light at the grill area. The only precaution is that it gets quite hot while operating, and as I haven't used it for extended periods of time, I can't say if that causes trouble, but I rather suspect that if operated for an...

2.0 out of 5 stars not durable enough...
Started out great, then the switch stuck, and the cheapo plastic coating on the arm cracked up, then the flex rusted... so it's fine if you don't expect it to last more than a couple of years...

Is a overall great idea; just shoulda been stainless...

I purchased this lamp about a year ago, and it's reasonable decent: a year outside and it has withstood the elements, etc., and provides good light at the grill area. The only precaution is that it gets quite hot while operating, and as I haven't used it for extended periods of time, I can't say if that causes trouble, but I rather suspect that if operated for an extended period, the heat may deteriorate the PVC sleeving around the end.

Update: after a couple of years, I'd have to remove a couple of stars from the rating. The vinyl tubing around the flexible neck is not weather-proof, and deteriorated rapidly. The unit began leaking water and rusting, so I had to re-wrap it with vinyl tape to prevent electrical hazards.

5.0 out of 5 stars good-quality product, April 12, 2009
This review is from: Designers Edge L856 Stainless Steel Flexible BBQ Light, Halogen (Lawn & Patio)
although I've owned this light for less than a month, I can tell you it is a good quality product made from solid materials and methods. It is extremely bright, very easy to hook up, and it is such a good product I am thinking about installing a another one on my barbecue Island. I read where one reviewer said the light head gets extremely hot, and I can agree with that, but, it is a halogen, another reviewer voiced concerns about the plastic tubing that in cases the flexible tubing was beginning to deteriorate, I live in the Southwest and we shall see how good it puts up with the summer sun. I will try to report back any findings after the first summer

4.0 out of 5 stars Great disposable light!, March 12, 2011
This review is from: Designers Edge L856 Stainless Steel Flexible BBQ Light, Halogen (Lawn & Patio)
Very inexpensive and works well. Does not tolerate the elements well and will require replacement within 3 years. I've found most patio fixtures age and require replacement. I'd rather replace a 25 dollar light than a 200 dollar light. I almost paid $249 for a replacement light. Not so sure it will do any better. So, I just ordered several lights and keep them in storage till I need them. Kind of like outdoor umbrellas. They weather and require replacement.

Biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased (from Amazon or any other place). Right out of the box the light didn't work. It was something as simple as a burnt-out bulb, but the light requires a special bulb that cannot be purchased at any normal hardware store.

I bought this in April 2009. I threw it away June 2010. The gooseneck portion of the light is covered in a plastic coating that is not waterproof. Water gets trapped inside and rusts the arm. There's a reason this light is only $30.

I was looking for bench lights for my woodworking machines and a friend suggested looking at grill lights. I ordered two. They work fine and problem solved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Designers Edge L-856 Hardwired Barbecue or Workbench Utility Light, April 15, 2009

Installed this as a workbench light and it is great. I built a large workbench mounting this against the back wall and it provides a nice bright light and flexibility to aim anywhere on the workbench. Just be careful when aiming as the deflector around the bulb area gets VERY hot; I'm going to get adhesive cork to wrap around that area.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars really. Good product but wears out., February 19, 2012

I built my own big green egg table and after about 30 hours of construction I wanted to add a light to the table. Ended up putting a power box in the corner that plugged in and was hard wired to this light. After spedning so much time designing and building the table I found this light which 2 years ago at least was the only hard wired outdoor grille light I could find. It has weathered ok. It still functions however the switch is beginning to stick and the flexible body is beginning to rust (it is encased in plastic). I would still recommend if you are looking for a hard wired outdoor grille light option. My plan is to replace whenever the top portion wears out and use wiring and holes that are in place. Overall it is a decent product as long as you realize like grille covers, griddles, and grilles themselves, it won't last forever.
