Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Though Designing Addressing Architectures for Routing and Switching rambles at times, when author Howard C. Berkowitz at last drives his point home, the value of this book becomes crystal clear. Written for the seasoned networking professional, it provides considerable assistance with the often onerous task of creating a new network or revamping an operational one. Berkowitz accomplishes this task by carefully walking the reader through logical and necessary steps, such as determining the network's function and features, understanding the principles underlying the necessary addressing tasks, and creating a usable and practical blueprint. Along the way, Berkowitz also explains the type of equipment needed for certain network situations and, obviously, what type of addressing scheme makes the most sense, particularly in Internet Protocol (IP)-enabled environments.

Helpful and clearly rendered diagrams are found on at least half of this book's pages. Berkowitz also generously proffers anecdotal data from his years in the industry, as well as a historical perspective on topics such as IP addressing, Internet connectivity, and network management and security. And he doesn't shy away from futuristic but pressing issues, such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Internet Protocol, version 6 (IPv6), which should certainly be considered when developing and updating networks. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

4.0 out of 5 stars More good material on Network Design, October 4, 1999

I initially read Howard's RFC2072, and later attended a CID course that he taught. He got off track at times in this book (just like the course), but always very worthwhile subjects. Howard has shown his depth of experience in Network Design, and this book enjoys a welcome spot on my technical bookshelf. If he publishes an advanced book on multi-homing issues with and without Firewalls, I'll definitely pick up a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone interested in networking, February 9, 1999
This review is from: Designing Addressing Architectures for Routing and Switching (MacMillan Network Architecture & Development) (Paperback)
Great tool for implanting a clue about networking in just about anyone interested in the subject. Offers a very good discussion of IP implementations, although it doesn't forget about other protocols. In short: buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work, very practical and well written!, February 23, 1999

We just finished a complete redesign and upgrade of a client's existing 'legacy' internetwork, all the way from the desktop of every remote operating site to the core datacenter; thus I am very familiar with his topics and can appreciate what is involved. With this in mind, I can honestly say that this book is a goldmine of useful, practical, real world information. While all of the material in this book is available elsewhere, Mr. Berkowitz, has mastefuly collected and synthesized it into a highly coherent, readable reference work. This book covers a lot of territory and it covers it very well. A well written book by an authority; I highly recommend it if you want to become more familiar with your environment and certainly if you are planning any changes.
