Designing Applications with MSMQ: Message Queuing for Developers

I started using MSMQ in June by reading the help files available in MSDN. After a couple of weeks I wanted to go deeper with MSMQ and bought Alan Dickman's book. To my suprise he does not add any new information that is not available in the MSDN. If you have MSDN library, do not waste your money on this book, it's all there in the help files. Note: my book (ISBN: 0-201-32581-0, 2nd printing) only contained just over 300 pages, when this page says it contains 512.

There are only a couple of examples in the book and they are VERY easy.

A beginners book.

The book is well structured and intutive. It is a good introduction to MSMQ and covers the interfaces to MSMQ well. The book is limited to the extent that it does not provide insight into MSMQ beyond the obvious. Further, the source code for this book is not available at the web site indicated in the book.

This book is primarly geared toward the VB folks. He addresses the C API but barely touches the COM C++ interface. Specifically, questions which are not resolved are 1.) Do I have to use smart pointers when I do not want to? 2.) How do you handle MSMQ Events with the C++? The examples given in VB do not extend to C++ and there is no clear way to go from registering MSMQEvent to the _DMSMQEventEvents implementation. I had to resort to the C API.

Very disappointed that MicroSoft would even recommend this book on their website!! The book is an obvious replica of the MSDN. Had the auther included VC++ COM examples it would have been worth buying.

Alan Dickman begins where Microsoft left off. This book is for any DNA application designer or developer that is required to have a comprehensive knowledge of the inner workings of MSMQ. Alan covers simple easy to understand samples for both the MSMQ C API and the MSMQ ActiveX objects. Alan also walks you through the architectural points of utilizing MSMQ in the enterprise from a developer's point of view. I would recommend this book to any Microsoft oriented developer.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about MSMQ. I read one other book that covered MSMQ before I had a chance to read this one and it left me disappointed. This book met all of my expectations. Alan clearly knows his subject, and he is able to communicate this in a very organized straightforward manner. This is not a book that just regurgitates the SDK documents. This book clearly teaches the reader how to program an application that uses MSMQ using the kinds of examples I often put together when I am researching a new technology. Alan also covers the architecture and design of an MSMQ application, which many authors of technical books often skip over. I wish all technical books were written this well.

I like to see published a book about MSMQ. This is a book mainly for programmers of MSMQ applications, the guys who actually build the application and already know Microsoft programming & environment very well (not for architects of MSMQ applications). With this book you will learn about a sophisticated product and this book is not for beginners. Maybe it goes to fast to details and it is difficult to grasp the whole picture. I personally liked most the analisis of Object Shipping, Transaction Processing and MSMQ Performance. If you want a book about messaging & queuing use cases try "Distributed Computing with IBM MQSeries", and if you want a book about messaging & queuing arquitecture and theory try "Messaging & Queuing Using the MQI".

This book is well written, and does not contain a lot of "useless information" just to make it look more complete. Alan has done a good job of providing examples and explains the technology well.

I was looking for a specific answer to a problem which I found in the book. When I used the example it didn't work. I emailed Alan and he quickly gave me the solution. Not only a good book, but a very helpful author.

Alan's book should be on the shelf of everybody who's using or even thinking about using MSMQ. It covers all of the key topics in a clear, complete, and very readable way. The book's approach is eminently practical, with useful sections on design issues, security, transactions, and more. And the examples are in both C++ and Visual Basic, making the book useful for all kinds of developers. MSMQ hasn't gotten the attention it deserves-I'm hoping this book will help remedy that.

Anyone who wants to understand and use MSMQ should have this book on their bookshelf. Alan has a deep understanding of not only the technology, but also the design patterns behind asynchronous message based application development. An excellent book.
