Excellent basic Web Design book
This book has all of the basics needed to get off on a good footing when starting to design Websites. It includes a solid review of HTML for those of you who still use it (instead of a WYSIWYG editor). I am using it for the textbook in my new online Web Design course

Outdated and not the best info on Communications theory
I am trying to teach a course from this book. I would not recomend it. The book clearly shows its age. In terms of communications theory, it is not expressed very well. I would look for newer books on HTML & CSS. If you still want to learn more design and theory aspects, look for Exploring Web Design (Design Exploration Series) by Jeremy Vest, William Crowson & Shannon...
