Book Description

October 31, 2006 0415374669 978-0415374668 1

This in-depth history of the interior design of ocean liners surveys the transient history of interior design in relation to the development of passenger shipping, from commissioning by the line owners, methods and sources for the original creation of designs through to its construction, use and influence. It is a short-lived branch of architecture and design, lasting an average of fifteen years. As the design and taste mirrors and reinforces cultural assumptions about national identity, gender, class and race, not only did the interiors of ocean going liners reflect the changing hierarchies of society and shifting patterns in globalization, but the glamour and styling of the liners were reflected back into the design of interiors on land.

Combining design history, architecture history, material and visual cultures, Designing Liners is a richly multidisciplinary work for those studying or researching this application of interior design.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic Book With No New Information or Pictures, November 30, 2006
This review is from: Designing Liners: A History of Interior Design Afloat (Hardcover)
Upon opening the package I was dissapointed with the book in general. It is small, non-glossy pages with hardly any pictures at all. The book brings forth no new information to someone who has an interest in liners and their design and has read material that was publised before this book. William H. Miller Jr's books have almost all of the pictures in his offereings, and then some, with a more detailed look into the interriors. Save yourself the problem of the return process.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anne Massey's 'Designing Liners', January 9, 2007
By
Barry Mcguren (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anne Massey's informative volume on the history of ocean liner interior design has many highs and a number of lows. Ms Massey is clearly an expert on interior design and her knowledge in this area is well presented in this title. However, ocean liner and maritime history aficionados who may wish to read this book should be prepared for a signifcant number of inaccuracies and errors in relation to the histories of certain liners and their designers. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable read that compliments previous titles on the topic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely boring book...., April 11, 2008
By
Nachtjager (Baton Rouge, LA) - See all my reviews
This book is written by a lady who has an interest in interior design, and that's about all this book is about - interior design. She could just as easily be talking about hotel rooms or office buildings through most of the book and you'd never know the difference. It's an extremely dull book with no new information for those interested in classic ocean liners. There's nothing you didn't already know in here, and honestly, I can't find any redeeming quality in this book.
