Essential Reading for Magazine Designers,
By Alfta "Golden Boar Creations www.goldenboar.com" (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Designing for Magazines (Paperback)
Designing for Magazines is everything that I hoped Paul Honeywill's Digital Magazine Design would be, but did not deliver on. It is a welcome overview of the art of magazine design and layout from Jan White. The book is divided into sections; one for each major element one is likely to encounter in magazine design. This includes: the cover, contents page, flash forms, departments, editorials, features and new products/reviews. White takes each element and examines its needs in detail, and gives numerous solutions that can be used to make your magazine design stand out and work effectively. But he goes beyond mere suggestions to describe why they work. One of the most outstanding features of the book is the hundreds of examples from actual magazines which White uses to illustrate his suggestions. There are plenty of before and after illustrations were we can see first hand how magazine designers took a design problem and corrected it. This book is really indispensable for anyone involved in the design of magazines, who wants there magazine design to stand out from the crowd while communicating effectively.
