Great for beginner photography of people, March 20, 2005
Of all of the books I have purchased (and I have purchased many) trying to learn how to take better photos of my children, this is by far the best at explaining the basics of photography relevant to my needs. It explains many of the basic photography concepts (aperture, shutter speed, lighting) with beautifully illustrated examples, all focused on photographing people. It also gives many practical tips about how to use available light, how to frame a shot to capture what you see, etc. So many of the other books I've purchased and reviewed have great information, but much of it less obviously relevant and not as clear on how to apply the skills to portrait photography or snapshots of family and friends.
As a new mom, I really don't care much about photographing a sunset, a landscape, or products. If that's what you're looking for, this is probably not your book. And if you've been around photography for a long time and already understand aperture and shutter speed and lighting, this is not likely for you, either. But if you're new to the world of photography and want to get the most out of your camera to document your life with those around you, this is a practical, easy to apply option that boosts your confidence and grasp of the concepts enough to take your photography to a new level.

Inspiring for beginner and intermediate photographers , December 24, 2005
This book has basic information such as part and functions of the various parts of different types of cameras. It also has in-depth information for experienced photographers such as lighting and conducting a photo shoot. Half of the book contains a variety of creative ways to use your photographs. These projects may be geared toward more experienced photographers but the beginner can alter them to be more simple and work their way up to more advanced techniques. My favorite part of the book is the way it's put together. It is organized nicely yet fun and the language is not too technical. The illustrations and design of the book demonstrates the author's knowledge and passion on photo arts. EXCELLENT BUY if you have a vested interest in photographing children!

A great guide to photographing like a professional, August 15, 2005
Love this book, I highly recommend it. Now I get studio looking portraits of my family right at home, it's great. The book is a great guide to photography, with topics such as: film type, light, aperture, shutter speed, color vs. black and white prints, and much more. For those of us that are taking snapshots and only like a few pictures from an entire roll of film, this book gets us thinking like a professional photographer. You learn how to take awesome pictures and be able to re-create the effects over and over, so that you have great pictures every time. The book is fun to read and the concepts are easy to apply. The second part of the book gives you some ideas on using your photos in creative ways. I'm an avid scrapbooker and I loved the ideas covered here. Again, I highly recommend this book.
