Desire Sparhawk of Providence, RI, was raised to mistrust the English, especially anyone connected with His Majesty's Navy, the very men who were responsible for her father's death during the American Revolution years before. So it is with great reluctance that she must accept the word of Capt. Lord John Herendon when he tells her he is a friend of her brother Obadiah, and that Obie is in prison in England and that only she can help him free him. Believing that she can free Obie and continue his mission to keep America out of the war between France and England, Desire reluctantly accepts Jack's offer to escort her to England on his ship. Little does Desire know that Jack holds many secrets that will change her future, as well as his own, and in the process take them through major battles of the war and minor skirmishes of the heart. Before they find the happiness they deserve, each learns that very difficult lesson of all's fair in love and war.Ms. Jarrett gives her characters the strength to accept each other for themselves and not their circumstances.
