Book Description

October 30, 2008
After decades of practice, the clean and simplified designs of Minimalism, where
less is more and form follows function are less used. There is an explosion of
vibrant design today that breaks free from the minimal style of approach, prevailing
in current design trends. With new technology, advanced engineering and
expanded choice of materials, designers are embracing design with scintillating
attitude, challenging aesthetic boundaries and speculating new expressions in
visual codes.
The upper crust of designers have always been synonymous with the fashion
designers of haute couture. They set trends and present bold concepts becoming
indicators for the mass market to follow. Desire presents the crème de la crème
of design today. On the one hand, it presents celebrated designers who are creating
design art, one-off pieces and limited editions which are considered works
of art. Created with experimental freedom and intended for a niche market, they
are exhibited at prestigious design galleries and sold at international auction
houses. On the other hand, the book introduces promising young talent culled
from around the world that is merging various design disciplines and producing
a new expressive language. Influenced by a diverse range of styles, their conceptual
designs are provocative. They challenge our understanding of furniture,
objects, interior design and will pave the way we will live in the future.
The pioneering examples showcased in Desire will shape the future aesthetic of
product, furniture and object design and be a sure indicator of trends that will be
influencing the design industry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Desire captures the awkward intersection of art and function tables stacked
precariously, hammocklike
suspensions unraveling midair, bushels of wheat cropped
into a prickly seat stressing the existent range of design, almost to a breaking point. --SOMA Magazine

Desire: The Shape of Things to Come, by Gestalten Press is visually interesting on every page...Desire transcends the neat categorization that the author provides, but is equally effective at provoking the emotion to which the title aspires. Though much of the work profiled here is more exhibition piece than industrial production, any reader is likely to discover something to lust after. --Robert Blinn, Core77 October 30th 2008

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good survey of desirable objects, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Desire: The Shape of Things to Come (Hardcover)
Lamps, chairs and tables are not only objects of daily life but objects of desire. At least to those interested in design and interior design. Which I am and therefore bought this book. And to be honest.. as much as I love most of Gestalten's publications and their general expertise within the field of design, I was a little disappointed by this one. Sure it does show a vast collection of furniture and objects in different chapters each of which carrying a different topic.. but what it lacks is something of a concept turning it into more than a mere - albeit up-to-date - collection of things you might desire. Still, I'm happy to have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desire is right!, September 2, 2009
This review is from: Desire: The Shape of Things to Come (Hardcover)
True to its title, this heavy book is filled with toothsome objects you'll want immediately in your house (but cannot afford). Nicely sectioned into chapters that illuminate how furniture can create desire or a feeling. Satisfying and great read!
