Wow!!!,

This review is from: Desire and Surrender (Paperback)
Katherine Sutcliffe, to me, is one of those 5 star author's. I don't rate many books in the A-plus, excellent category. The "elite" have to have memorable characters in a unique setting that support a truly GREAT story. Also, lets not forget that the relationship between hero and heroine has to be so strong that it leaves you thinking about the book days or weeks after you have finished it. I love when I find a book like that (hope I don't sound like a complete loser!!). Desire and Surrender fits into this category. When I first picked up the book, I wasn't sure the Texas fight for independence and The Alamo was going to thrill me. Boy, was I wrong!! It just goes to show that any created situation can be successful and enjoyed if it is compassionate, well written and compelling. Ms. Sutcliffe gives us unforgettable characters in a unique setting with a forward moving ,active plot. I just loved the heroine and hero- Angelique Duhon and Alejandro de Bastitas. As their realtionship progresses the author leaves few emotions untapped. In this historical tale we have great elements of love, honor, family secrets, betrayal, loyalty, patriotism and war. The war threatens not only the love between Angelique and Alejandro but tests the strength and foundation of the De Bastitas family- a family torn apart by love and loyalty. Add to the mix murder, family betrayal and abuse and you have a thouroughly captivating novel. I believe this novel is one Of Katherine Sutcliffe's earlier works and certainly is one that launched her career. This is the fourth book of hers that I have read. ALL have been excellent, page turning , all- night reads that leave me sleep deprived the next day..... but still wanting more. Thank you, once again, Ms. Sutcliffe...And, thank you Jove books for keeping this classic in print and available to all new readers as well as her faithful fans.

What a disappointment!,
By Emma Hathaway "E. Hathaway" (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Desire and Surrender (Paperback)
The story started out okay... but then everything just sort of plummeted. I didn't like the hero. I just couldn't justify the reason why he's so jaded. (...) Boo hoo... there's no reason to treat Angelique like she is one too.
And why does Angelique put up with him anyway? I didn't see any grand passion between the two of them. So maybe she was an innocent experiencing love for the first time... but surely, she should have woken up from that dillusion after the first time he humiliated her...I also didn't like the way Alejandro keeps grabbing her and shoving her around. The insensitive jerk practically rapes her after her horrifying ordeal... Speaking of which, most of their sexual interaction practically starts with off with him forcing her... and magically, she just sort of forgets what an a-hole he is, and "surrenders"... pul-lease The only interaction between the two of them happened at the beginning and the end of the story. They spent more time apart than together... I don't know how Angelique keeps up her love for him. It's like she has no self control. No matter how cruelly he treats her, she doesn't seem to have a problem sleeping with him... what a joke! There's no character growth, no emotional bonding, nada... Don't buy this book... don't read it... you'll end up hating yourself for it...

I liked this historical because it had a different spin than traditional historicals-- not just because it was a western, but because the aristocratic family was Spanish. I enjoyed the pull between the two main characters. I felt like they were deep and you could really understand who they were, their motivations, etc. If the attraction/love/relationship between the two characters FITS for me, if it's believable, that's all I ask for.

Very tragic...and romantic,

This book was a great read. I love Katherine Sutcliffe and this is a great example of her talent. It's very sad and although you'll be ready to choke the characters into understanding, it is great.
