4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow rock
Eagle-Eye Cherry's platinum debut CD will be remembered primarily for the hit "Save Tonight" and his odd-sounding name, but it really is a terrific CD overall. It's the type of CD that I don't listen to often but impresses when I slip it into my stereo. Like "Save Tonight," most of the songs are mid-rock and mellow sounding, almost jazzy at times. 3.0 out of 5 stars Almost all the songs are very good.
Almost all the songs are very good, and after saying that, you're probably wondering why I gave it three stars. Well, I don't particularly like When Mermaids Cry. I think it is sort of stupid. The songs that stand out are Save Tonight, Shooting Up In Vain, and Permanent Tears. Some of the others are good, except most of them sound just like the others. Hard to tell the...

None of the other songs really stand out as could-a-been hits because this CD is best listened to as a whole. The CD also ends beautifully with a cover of "Desireless," which was written by Eagle-Eye's father. Eagle-Eye wrote and co-produced most of the album, and he really is a major talent. Too bad Eagle-Eye's most recent CD didn't keep him in the spotlight, where he deserves to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars good music in a bad music period, May 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Desireless (Audio CD)
This cd, was one of the best ones I have listened to in a long time. It has no trouble standing out from the new pop music which has many people with computerized voices and pretty faces. Eagle-Eye Cherry writes his own words, plays several instruments, and sings so well. The tunes of this cd grab you, and the words make you think. Every song on this cd, save one or two have tunes that get stuck in your head, yet you want them stuck. The hit single, Save Tonight, is merely a preview of how different and good Eagle Eye's music is. The tunes are laid back and carry you through the song. Conversation, Falling in Love Again, Death Defied by Will, and When Mermaids Cry are some of the best songs on that cd. Buy his cd if you haven't yet because you just can't miss Eagle-Eye's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great unique sound!, March 25, 2000
This review is from: Desireless (Audio CD)
I don't think I've heard anyone that was as unique sounding as Eagle Eye Cherry. His "Save Tonight", "Falling in Love Again" and "When Mermaids Cry" are instant hits. "Shooting Up in Vain" really conveys an attitude like that of its title. The other songs are an ecletic group including saxophone, piano, acoustic and electric guitar.. makes for a great CD! I would recommend it!

Eagle Eye Cherry is one of the truest artists of our time. I am always hesitant to fall for someone on their first album but I did and have fallen for him again and again every day since. This album is a perfect gift for just about anybody and a treat for your own soul when you need it. Every song will move you in some way, shape or form.

4.0 out of 5 stars More to Cherry than Meets the Eye, February 25, 2000

From the very first time I heard the opening track (and first single) "Save Tonight," I was hooked. Catchy acoustic guitar combined with a memorable chorus. I wanted to hear it over and over again; and yet I had to wait a year before the album arrived in America. I was fortunate enough to discover the talents of Eagle-Eye during a trip to Italy in 1997. Thank you Europe for another wonderful musical import! The vocals at times surely bring to mind Ben Harper, yet Cherry's music maintains a simple, yet defined style. His songs are a mix of forlorn love and troubled youth, yet in some way they all speak to the listener. Standouts are "Worried Eyes," and the haunting, yet beautiful title track, composed by Cherry's father Don. Another favorite is "Permanent Tears," whose guitar and piano evoke images of a soft ocean breeze at the close of a summer's day.

Quick Picks: If you enjoy this, you may enjoy the following (and vice versa): Ben Harper, Vertical Horizon, Ben Lee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful funky mellow groovin' music, June 12, 2000

This is sophisticated, hip music, equally good to romance, relax or revive. Every song is interesting and toe-tapping. I have listened to it in full over 10 times in two weeks without being bored by it. In fact, I like it better as the songs become more familiar. Be aware that none of the songs are really like "Save Tonight" yet I am glad I bought this to hear each great tune and its smooth, soulful vocals.

4.0 out of 5 stars This album rocks pretty well., October 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Desireless (Audio CD)
I got this CD through BMG just for the song "Falling in Love Again." "Save Tonight" was really the only song on this album I absolutely hated. I loved all the other ones, especially "Permanent Tears." I get the message behind that song, but the music itself evokes a very sexy mood, and it makes you want to dance under a full moon. I think Mr. Cherry is gonna do bigger things, and I want to grab his next project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eagle-Eye Cherry is a Musical Genius, June 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Desireless (Audio CD)
After buying the CD, I listened to "Save Tonight" over and over again. Then I took advantage of my CD player's shuffle option, and realized what a jewel the album really is. All twelve songs are powerful, deeply emotional, and have changed my life. Since buying it in January, I haven't listened to another CD! I would recommend "Desireless" to anyone that appreciates effort and simply great music.

Eagle-Eye Cherry is a good artist. He combines great music with powerful lyrics throughout this whole CD. If you like "Save Tonight" then I suggest you buy this CD. It's worth your money.
