Book Description

January 1, 2006
Desires and Deceptions is the compelling story of a young girl’s journey into womanhood and business venture that brings her to grips with her romantic ambition and conflicting values. Marisa is enthralled as a young girl by the beautiful estates where her father works as a gardener. At age 13, she determines she will enjoy that lofty lifestyle but, she is not prepared for the barriers designed by those who don’t think she should be allowed to rise out of her humble background.

Marisa struggles with sheer determination to win acceptance into a society she envies. Along the road she finds love, heartache and disillusion. She is bewildered by the snobbery and veneer of those she seeks to emulate.

Desires and Deceptions is a fascinating journey with the backdrop of the gold rush growth of the Silicon Valley, where dreams, schemes and genius abound.

More About the Author

Catherine Burr is an American romance novelist and parenting humorist. As an indie author, her books have sold over 100,000 copies. Her books have appeared on many best seller lists including over 52 weeks on the Amazon.com Best Seller List.

Catherine's first book, "Motherhood is not for Wimps" was co-written with her sister and generated much interest including a humorous online support group, a popular syndicated column and being featured in the textbook, "Merry Wives and Others" as a Foremost Domestic Humorist in North America, her parenting humor writing being compared to Erma Bombeck and Dave Barry.

In the early 2000's, Catherine had several novels published including "Silicon Secrets" which was turned into a screenplay. Catherine is also the author of many short stories, including, "An Inconvenient Attorney" which was on the Amazon.com Best Seller List for over 52 weeks.

Originally from Canada, Catherine's family moved to Silicon Valley where she grew up fascinated with the high-tech world. She graduated from Saratoga High School, and West Valley College, worked in the business world before marrying and raising a family. While her children were growing up, she kept humorous notes about motherhood, which turned into her first published book, "Motherhood is not for Wimps." When her children started college, she gathered up her notes she'd been keeping about being a Silicon Valley executive's wife and wrote her first novel, "Silicon Secrets," followed by "Desires and Deceptions" and the spy thriller, "Orchids to Die For."

Catherine says she has "lost count" of how many books she has now authored. After many years in the Bay Area and living a bi-country lifestyle, zipping between California and the Caribbean, she headed for her dream cabin in the mountains of the Sierra's in Northern California where she writes, gardens, and has pretty blue eyes.

This review is from: Desires and Deceptions (Paperback)
I thought this was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to sail away into another world for a few hours. Catherine Burr begins the story from the early days of Santa Clara Valley -- meaning pre-dot-com madness, and carries it through when the valley became known as Silicon Valley, which is the backdrop for this book.

The story follows Marisa, who is brought up without a lot of money but well meaning enough by her parents, that is until tragedy strikes, and her world is turned upside down, Marisa thinks money and things will replace her heartache. While she is not completely destitute growing up, she wants more and sets her goals to find it. Husband in hand, they move to the affluent San Francisco Bay Area town of Saratoga, California. While her husband seeks to succeed in business in Silicon Valley, Marisa seeks to find her place amidst the rich as she tries to hide secrets from her past. I find the author's descriptions of life in wealthy Saratoga - interesting indeed!

I also would recommend Silicon Secrets by Catherine Burr.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzles, January 18, 2006
This review is from: Desires and Deceptions (Paperback)

In Catherine Burr's latest novel, "Desires and Deceptions," her superbly crafted character, Marisa, takes us on a reflective ride during the heyday of the "Dot Com" era. This mystery romance kept me turning the pages, as drugs, sex, petty class hates, social strata idiocies, college fraternity parties, coming out balls, and the extravagant nouveau rich foibles screamed out from the author's emotional writing.

In this novel, Catherine Burr brings readers into another world; Silicon Valley with all of its luxury, all of its plush beauty, its money, and the beautiful people. This novel kept me turning page after page faster than a dot com IPO climbed to its prime.
