Book Description

April 28, 2000

ZENworks is one of the most exciting new technologies around. By automating desktop management and workstation maintenance, it frees system administrators to work on more pressing issues and allows users to feel confident that their workstations are set up in peak efficiency.

ZENworks is full of useful tools and features, but like all clever products, it's also complicated. How does NDS performance affect where the application objects should be placed? What components from the starter pack are required for your particular management strategy? How does the software integrate with your current system architecture? Desktop Management with Novell ZENworkswill answer these and other questions you have about this powerful new product.

This book covers:

  • Client management for Windows 95, 98 and NT
  • Workstation manager
  • Novell Application Launcher
  • Workstation objects and inventory
  • Remote management including security issues

Whether you're trying to figure out what policy objects are available for your Windows platform or you need to restore a file that a user has inadvertently deleted, Desktop Management with Novell ZENworks will help you understand the complexities of the tools and maximize their power.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Desktop Management with Novell ZENworks documents Novell's Zero Effort Networking (ZENworks) suite of desktop-management tools. Written from a network administrator's point of view, the book explains what each element of the ZENworks suite can do to ease management tasks and reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) on Windows networks. It explicitly states strategies and procedures for using ZENworks, making it relatively easy to implement their use on a network. Moreover, the text carefully explains the technique for making ZENworks elements fit in with other Windows desktop and application-management tools, including Microsoft's Zero Administration Kit (ZAK). Lots of screen shots keep readers oriented as they correlate the documentation to their network, plus more than a few shortcut procedures that might otherwise be hidden from view.

This book is heavy on text, which means it contains detailed information on configuration options and software features. It's also great on background information for readers preparing to make deployment decisions and for conceptual information about the ZENworks architecture for those up against a tough bug. It's a fine resource for anyone using Novell's network-management toolkit. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Novell ZENworks suite of network- and applications-management software, its strategic position, and its practical use. The book also discusses client and server installation, policy packages, workstation objects, application metering, and remote management.

This review is from: Desktop Management with Novell Zen Works (Paperback)
The book was referred to me by another system administrator, who used it on his large corporate network with ease. this book does provide a great starting point, covers many of the details, and can be used just by itself to setup zenworks

4.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the available ZENworks literature..., July 7, 2000
This review is from: Desktop Management with Novell Zen Works (Paperback)
This book will help both beginner and experienced users of the Novell ZENworks product and supplement the sparse documentation provided by Novell. Each topic is explained as both an overview and in detail. Even more obscure topics such as licensing and inventory are well covered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book......, July 14, 2000
This review is from: Desktop Management with Novell Zen Works (Paperback)
I agree with the other reviewers.... it's a good supplement to the Novell Documentation. The specific registry settings for the policies is a great reference, and tool to help you troubleshoot.
